Telefonica said it has signed a global deal with Chinese video-sharing app TikTok to develop local co-marketing and strategic activities.

The partners intend to create innovative new ways for the TikTok community to enjoy their favourite short-form videos across Telefonica services, including a series of local activations in the operators key markets across Europe and Latin America.

Movistar Fusión customers in over a million homes across Spain with UHD set-tops will be able to access the TikTok app via the TV.

Isaac Bess, global partnerships and distribution director at TikTok said that “The alliance with TikTok will allow both companies to combine marketing activities to roll out new experiences to offer to our customers.”

It is a great opportunity, he added, to reach millennials and Generation Z offering them a great service and guaranteeing the best experience on their devices. “Thanks to this new collaboration, Telefónica’s customers can share their passion, creativituy and great moments on TikTok and enjoy the content of the platform with a better functionality and ease of use than ever,” Isaac noted.

Attract the youngest public

With this association, Telefónica aims to attract the youngest public, who consume a large part of the multimedia content through mobile phones.

In fact, TikTok is an extremely popular app among younger users. This strategy, however, can be somewhat complicated for those users who do not have Movistar or a Telefónica operator.

The agreement will allow, in the future, develop new platforms and services between the two companies which, in turn, will offer new revenue streams and attract new users.

Users of Telefónica’s Movistar Home smart home offering or who have its voice-enabled remote control, will be able to interact with the apps using voice via the Aura virtual assistant developed by the telco.

TikTok, one of the most popular applications of the moment, has already collaborated with different companies related to the telecommunications market. One of them is O2, where in the United Kingdom they launched a viral campaign to promote both services, reaching 2.6 billion views.
