Apple to Update AI Feature After Inaccurate News Alerts Spark Criticism
On January 6, Apple announced plans to update its Apple Intelligence feature on the latest iPhones after a series of criticisms over inaccurate news alerts.
The update will clarify when notifications ae AI-generated summaries, following news outlets’ concerns were vocalized, including the BBC, over the system’s reliability.
The new Apple intelligence features consolidate multi-app notifications into a single lock screens summary for quick scanning. Confusingly enough, summaries compiled by this AI have become misguided regarding key details while creating headlines meant to mislead.
One of the most recent high-profile mistakes involved the BBC’s reporting on Luigi Mangione, accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, where features of Apple Intelligence incorrectly summarized one headline to indicate Mangione had shot himself.
Other mistakes included saying Luke Littler won the PDC World Darts Championship hours before the event started and another claiming that Spanish tennis star Rafael Nadal came out as gay.
Immediate Action on All Apple Intelligence Features
Errors have led the BBC to demand immediate action on the basis that Apple’s AI-generated summaries contradict their original content. The British news agency asserted the need for accuracy in news reporting, indicating such inaccuracies undermine public trust.
Apple, in response, said it was working on a software update that will make it clearer when notifications are from Apple Intelligence. The company has also confirmed that the Apple Intelligence feature is at the beta phase and that changes are made based on user feedback.
Is Apple Intelligence on iOS 18 Beta?
The Apple Intelligence feature is currently only available on the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models running iOS 18.1 and above. It has been designed to make it quicker for users to scan key details from recent notifications.
Apple’s AI isn’t alone in its criticism, but Google’s AI-powered search result summaries have also encountered its own set of issues. While both companies work to make their AI better, incidents such as these influence the use of generative AI for news and information.
Apple released an update that should bring more accurate and clear summaries to address the issue at hand. Apple’s new artificial Intelligence AI features could either prove the change that the company is seeking or worsen the situation.
