Canadian Startup Builds CM-70 Missile to Counter Fast-Moving Drones

On July 27, Canadian Calgary-based defense startup introduced a lightweight drone interceptor, the CM-70, operating without GPS or radio links to protect military positions and critical infrastructure from growing aerial threats at a lower cost.

North Vector Dynamics presents the drone interceptor as both a battlefield system and industrial policy statement. Its compact design targets the widening cost gap between inexpensive attack drones and conventional air-defense missiles that can cost millions of dollars for a single launch.

Canada Builds a Compact Counter-Drone Missile

Based in Calgary, Canada, North Vector Dynamics described the CM-70 as “more than an interceptor” and a “demonstration of sovereign capability,” highlighting Canadian ability to design, manufacture, and control sensitive defense technology without relying heavily on foreign suppliers.

Weighing about 3 kilograms and measures 0.9 meters, the CM-70 drone interceptor has a stated range of 3.5 kilometers and can travel at speeds of up to 900 kilometers per hour.

The CM-70 uses semi-active laser guidance, allowing the drone interceptor to follow a target illuminated by a laser designator. This removes the need for GPS navigation or radio communication links that could be detected, disrupted, or jammed in electronic warfare conditions.

Its forward-firing fragmentation warhead directs blast and shrapnel toward the target, improving the chance of destroying small, fast-moving drones. This targeted design could increase the effectiveness of anti drone weapons against compact aerial threats.

The missile is intended for Group I to Group III unmanned aircraft, covering threats from small quadcopters to larger tactical systems weighing hundreds of kilograms. As an anti drone weapon, the CM-70 is designed to engage in several categories of unmanned aircraft.

North Vector Dynamics says the interceptor can launch from fixed ground positions, vehicles, or airborne platforms. Such deployment flexibility could strengthen anti UAV technology across different military environments.

That flexibility could support troops near the front line while also protecting power stations, water facilities, communications sites, and other infrastructure vulnerable to repeated drone attacks. The system could help security forces anti drones before they reach sensitive locations.

The company has received backing from Canada’s Department of National Defence and private investors. In May 2026, Czechoslovak Group invested through its Tech Horizons fund, reflecting growing international interest in affordable, layered defenses against mass-produced aerial weapons. The investment also highlights rising demand for cost-effective anti-drone weapons.

Gormer University of Calgary engineering professor, Chief executive Paul Ziadé, leads a team with experience in aerodynamics, hypersonics, rocket propulsion, testing, and Canadian aerospace development. Its expertise could support guidance systems designed to detect and avoid drone countermeasures during flight.

Jet Drones Increase Demand for Faster Interceptors

The supporting report places the CM-70 within a more urgent battlefield problem: Russia’s growing production of jet-powered Geran drones and cruise-missile-type systems derived partly from Iran’s Shahed family. This development is increasing demand for faster and more affordable drone interception systems.

Traditional Shahed-style drones generally travel much more slowly, but newer Geran variants are expected to reach speeds between 300 and 600 kilometers per hour. Russia also plans broader production increases that could eventually deliver tens of thousands of jet drones annually, according to the report. Such production volumes are pushing countries to expand their inventories of anti drone weapons.

For Ukraine and other countries exposed to mass drone attacks, faster targets create a new drone interceptor challenge.

Existing anti UAV technology may struggle to respond when hostile aircraft combine higher speeds with changing flight paths.

The CM-70’s reported speed gives it a potential advantage against these threats. As an anti drone weapon, the missile could offer a faster response to jet-powered systems.

A version exceeding 1,000 kilometers per hour could pursue targets such as the Geran-5, while its 3.5-kilometer range exceeds the 2-kilometer reach reported for Estonia’s compact Mark I interceptor.

Its International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) free status may strengthen its export prospects. Because the missile sits outside US International Traffic in Arms Regulations, Canada and allied buyers could face fewer American approval requirements when purchasing, transferring, or integrating it into national defense networks.

The project reflects a wider shift toward smaller interceptors built for repeated use against cheap drones. Affordable anti drone weapons are becoming increasingly important as armed forces confront larger waves of unmanned aircraft.
