The iPhone parent is planning to unveil its first Apple smart glasses during the WWDC in 2027, in California, using on-device processing, limited recording tools and clear privacy safeguards before a wider international launch planned for the end of the year.
The delay highlights Apple’s challenge where it’s entering a camera-driven AI market without damaging the privacy image it has spent more than a decade building.
Privacy Shapes Apple’s Glasses Strategy
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that the Apple smart glasses release date may have moved to late 2027, while Apple develops safeguards and prepares its privacy message. Internally known as N50, the Apple smart glasses project is reportedly being developed within Apple’s Vision hardware group. Apple has not confirmed the device.
“The teams developing glasses within Apple’s Vision hardware group and elsewhere in the company see privacy as priority No. 1, I’m told,” Gurman wrote.
The concern around AI smart glasses with camera is clear: they can film people without warning. Unlike phones, glasses may point at someone while appearing ordinary.
Meta has faced criticism over moderator-reviewed footage, reported facial-recognition tests and safeguards that researchers bypassed. Some courts have also restricted the devices.
That history challenges the Apple AI smart glasses team. Apple must offer useful visual tools while collecting and storing less personal information.
“The company has spent more than a decade making privacy one of its defining product messages. Simply entering the same category as Meta risks undermining that reputation, regardless of how Apple’s approach differs,” Gurman wrote.

On-Device AI Could Reduce Privacy Risks
Apple is expected to make the Apple smart glasses process information locally or through an iPhone, limiting personal data sent to cloud servers. This could allow smart glasses with AI features to identify objects, answer questions, and provide directions without constant uploads, while improving response speed.
Apple may avoid using customer recordings to train the models behind its Apple AI smart glasses. It is also unlikely to send footage to human reviewers.
Another safeguard could remove always-on recording. Users may need to start each video manually, while lights or sounds could warn nearby people that recording has begun.
The company has reportedly tested AI smart glasses with camera that use their lenses only to understand the environment, which could support navigation without saving photographs or videos.
Apple has also considered a camera-free version. Removing image capture from the main Apple smart glasses model, however, could weaken the appeal of hands-free first-person recording.
A middle ground could involve smart AI glasses with camera controls, including short recording limits, visible indicators and stronger permission settings that make hidden filming harder.
Apple could also create AI smart camera glasses that separate visual sensing from saved recordings. Images used for an AI request might remain temporary and be deleted after processing.
The second expected Apple smart glasses release date remains unconfirmed. Apple may reveal the device at WWDC in June 2027 before beginning sales later that year.
If released, the Apple AI smart glasses will test whether advanced cameras and AI can fit into daily life without making public places feel constantly watched.
Ultimately, the Apple smart glasses will be judged by whether users trust Apple’s privacy limits.
