On September 3, Google Search Advocate, John Mueller, warned SEO professionals that changing sitemap URLs with timestamp parameters can damage sitemap priority, since unstable addresses send signals to search engines about which sitemap version should be treated as official.
Cache busting technique helps browsers refresh files, but for SEO crawling, sitemap URLs are expected to remain stable.
A parameter can make a browser treat a file as new, but not the main types of sitemaps search engines revisit.
Cache Busting Poor Sitemap Fix
The technique, cache busting, involves appending a changing URL parameter, such as timestamp, to sitemap file addresses each day, prompting search engines to refetch the file instead of relying on the standard “lastmod” tag that signals when content was last updated.
“Hi John, I’ve been trying to learn some more about sitemap.xmls. Heard about this thing called cachebusting by adding a ?v=unix timestamp to the end of a sitemap url in a sitemapindex. In the Dev blog I could only find a comment on accurate <lastmod> values, I guess it applies too right?” user @seoharbour asked Mueller on Bluesky.
Website owners have long used cache busting on CSS, JavaScript and image files to ensure browsers load the freshest version of those resources, but applying the same method to sitemaps is a newer and more unusual practice.
Responding on the social same social platform, Bluesky, Google John Mueller questioned why anyone would cache-busting in a sitemap file.
“Why would you use cache-busting in a sitemap file? Perhaps I’m misunderstanding what your goal is though, feel free to elaborate!” replied Mueller.
The user described a large site where child sitemap URLs received fresh daily timestamps. For dynamic sitemaps, that may force another crawl, but it also changes the resource address. The goal was to make search engines refetch the sitemap by changing its URL instead of relying on the <lastmod> field.
Mueller pushed back on that approach, revealing that constant sitemap URL change could signal to search engines that the canonical address of the content itself is also changing. That creates problems not only for search engines, but also for tracking and consistency.
His broader point was that clean, stable URLs matter. For dynamic sitemaps, regularly updating the contents is different from repeatedly changing the sitemap address itself.
That distinction is important for sitemap priority, as trying to trigger another crawl through a changing timestamp does not necessarily make the sitemap more valuable to Google.
Instead, it can make the technical signals around it less stable.
Google’s 2025 Warning Adds Context
In 2025, Mueller made a related point about sitemaps best practices, addressing sites that changed every <lastmod> field without meaningful page updates.
“However, setting today’s date in a sitemap file isn’t going to be something that works in favor of anyone, it’s just lazy,” Muller wrote on Reddit.
The older comments support the newer warning. False freshness signals can make SEO crawling indexing less useful by forcing search engines to separate genuine updates from artificial ones.
For automated website indexing, systems should therefore report real changes instead of manufacturing them. That makes sitemap monitoring important on large sites where automated tools can modify thousands of entries.
Google has repeatedly said meaningful page changes should drive <lastmod>, which remains part of sitemaps best practices. Different types of sitemaps may organize separate areas of a site, but their locations should remain predictable.
Even with dynamic sitemaps, frequent updates do not require constantly changing the sitemap address. That leaves sitemap priority tied to clean technical signals rather than forced crawler visits.
For large publishers and platforms, sitemap priority should come from accurate information, not rotating timestamps. Ultimately, stable files, meaningful dates, and honest update signals give sitemap priority more value than shortcuts designed simply to attract crawler attention.
