Today, under increasing pressure both from political and tech giants, the Pentagon is pushing forward with AI-driven solutions that are supposed to bring speed and accuracy.

Initiatives of AI use in war began in 2017, with the computer vision project, Project Maven, that evolved AI systems that compile disparate data into actionable intelligence surpassing that of humans.

As AI battlefield speeds up it doesn’t come without warning.

Blur Between Tool and Command

Generative AI is already used to help identify threats, suggest military action, and create target lists, and while advocates claim this could increase accuracy and reduce civilian harm, AI researchers and human rights advocates are ringing the warning bell.

“‘Human in the loop’ is not always a meaningful mitigation,” chief AI scientist at the AI Now Institute, Heidy Khlaaf  continued to state “it wouldn’t really be possible for a human to sift through that amount of information to determine if the AI output was erroneous,” warned Heidy Khlaaf.

War is no longer a game of power, it’s an algorithmic battle, and AI doesn’t hesitate, or even doubt. An AI military strategy calculates, executes, and accelerates beyond basic human understanding.

In this intense speed of AI military strategy, what happens when machines, trained on the cold calculus of victory, mistake speed for wisdom? The future of AI for the military may be moving too fast to debate, replacing human doubt with robotic certainty.

The uncertainty of AI and warfare comes with an issue called classification by compilation. AI can connect pieces of seemingly harmless data to create a certain picture, something human analysts would not be able to do. As companies like Palantir and Microsoft create AI that may deal with classification itself, the risk of under or over military data has grown.

The Pentagon calls it “decision superiority,” but there’s no undo button for an AI misinterpreting a shadow as an enemy, no court martial for an algorithm that escalates a skirmish into a slaughter.

AI Will Transform the Character of Warfare

The Pentagon’s acceptance of AI warfare is already here, pushing into everyday life. Just as consumers are engaging with smarter assistants and chatbots, military commanders are relying on AI more for operational intelligence such as the use of AI battle drones.

A recent report titled “AI for Military Decision-Making” by Georgetown’s Center for Security and Emerging Technology found that “military commanders are interested in AI’s potential to improve decision-making, especially at the operational level of war,” the authors stated.

The question is, how far should AI be able to access the decision making in the military?

In October 2024, the Biden administration released their national security memorandum on AI, the Trump administration emphasized on less regulation and more innovation. As AI moves up, taking on more important sensitive roles policymakers are struggling to keep up.

War AI is advancing faster than systems that can be regulated or ethically debated. Tech is powerful yet unregulated, which risks the confusion of speed with accuracy. As tensions across the globe are rising AI and warfare are turning heads and the challenge will be to make machines improve human judgment, rather than having it replaced.
