UK Cannot Take Its Eyes Off of China’s Tech Influence

China's AI cooperation ambitions are of no accident, DeepSeek, a ChatGPT rival, shows a bold strategy of reshaping global tech dynamics.

In January 20, China’s AI cooperation ambitions are of no accident, DeepSeek, a ChatGPT rival, shows a bold strategy of reshaping global tech dynamics, pushing the UK to strengthen its own innovation efforts.

The creation of DeepSeek created with a fund in Hangzhou means that China is willing to spend money ($5.6M) to become a leader in AI innovation. With its considerable flow of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects and high volumes of patents applied for, China’s AI international cooperation is changing tech ecosystems around the world.

China’s advances in AI are posing some very serious questions for the UK. The UK is fully aware that it must improve and work out how it can give a boost to its own tech industry. The recent trip to Beijing by Chancellor Rachel Reeves shows how the cooperative AI foundation between the UK and China is about to begin.

China’s AI Cooperation Strategy That Keeps It Growing

China’s investment into DeepSeek is an example of how policy, talent, and infrastructure are being invested in by the country. With over 6,000 STEM PhDs from Chinese universities graduating every month compared to a meager 1,500 from the UK, these statistics paint a clear picture.

This growth of China is indicative of the 1.7 million filings of patent applications China has projected for the year 2023. That’s an increase of two thirds from the previous year and is significantly higher than the US where only 600,000 patents are being filled.

China’s investment on AI goes beyond just software. It includes integration of smart electric vehicles and the automation of factories using AI powered machines that work twenty-four seven. In doing so, China has come to lead clean technology patents, making three quarters of the world’s filings.

UK business leaders who traveled to China in January witnessed it firsthand, from the clearer skies to the innovation of Chinese electric vehicles. Though China’s method is concerning from the perspective of data privacy and security, its AI boost is undeniable.

Last year the US National Science Board stated that “We already see this in artificial intelligence, where China out publishes us, has more patents, and produces more students than the United States.” This revealed the US China AI cooperation which was leading in science and engineering.

What Can the UK Observe?

As China grows, the UK needs to try its level best to improve its own technological and AI capabilities to build a strong China Uk cooperation. Chancellor Reeves highlighted the need to form a long-term economic relationship with China without compromising on national interests. The UK has been welcoming in investment in its tech industry, but there are nevertheless various obstacles.

An AI innovation such as DeepSeek carries hope and danger. While international cooperation in AI with China might pay dividends, the UK must also invest in homegrown talent, develop more mature industrial policy, and build stronger public private partnerships if it is to thrive in the age of AI.

China’s own AI cooperation success is both a lesson and a warning. The UK must act rapidly to avoid getting left behind in the next wave of technological transformation.
