Apple Cuts 600 California Jobs Following Car Project Closure

Apple announces significant job cuts in Santa Clara, California causing impact on the workforce and the termination of the car project.

Apple is undergoing a significant reduction in its workforce, eliminating 614 positions across multiple sites in Santa Clara, California, marking the company’s most substantial job cuts since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, following the car project closure.

This development was officially disclosed in a WARN notice by the state of California, pinpointing the affected Apple employees and their workplaces. The formal notification to the impacted staff was given on March 28, with the layoffs set to take effect on May 27.

Unlike its industry counterparts, Apple has largely steered clear of major layoffs, attributed to its relatively moderate expansion during the pandemic period. However, this trend seems to be shifting, as evidenced by the recent termination of a high-profile initiative aimed at developing an electric, autonomous vehicle within the Special Projects Group.

The exact assignments linked to the job eliminations were not specified in the California announcement. Nonetheless, the impacted sites are not within Apple’s main campus in Cupertino but are rather in smaller, peripheral offices, potentially tied to covert projects.

The roles being dispensed with range from machine shop managers to hardware engineers and product design engineers, as reported by the San Francisco Chronicle. In response to inquiries about the layoffs, an Apple spokesperson has chosen not to comment.
