Apple Watch Sleep Apnea Will Come to the Giant’s Watches
Apple is upgrading the health capabilities of its Apple Watch Series 10, Ultra 2, and Series 9 by adding an Apple Watch sleep apnea or condition detection feature to monitor sleep quality and detect serious health conditions.
This addition makes the Watch for sleep apnea an easy and more accessible tool.
Sleep Apnea Skips Blood Oxygen with Apple Watch
Sleep apnea is a common disorder that many people suffer from for several reasons, such as overweight issues and obesity. Sleep apnea occurs when breathing repeatedly stops and restarts, hindering the oxygen from reaching the body equally, often disturbing sleep.
It is known that monitoring sleep apnea requires a blood oxygen sensor, but the latest Apple Watch sleep apnea feature goes beyond Apple Watch blood oxygen sleep apnea, with a new feature called “Breathing Disturbances”, which uses the watch’s built-in accelerometer to detect movement of the wrist during sleep.
Using this method makes the device easier to track sleep apnea symptoms without the need for any other devices or procedures.
Can an Apple Watch Detect Sleep Apnea?
Apple Watch detects the sleeping condition over a course of 30 days, the Watch gathers information to examine breathing patterns and identify sleep apnea patterns. In case of consistent severe to moderate signs detection, the user gets notified. Then, the results are automatically displayed in the ‘Health’ app under the Breathing Disturbances section, where users will view results classified as Elevated or Not Elevated.
This function is not limited to long-term monitoring. To obtain a brief picture of the quality of their sleep each night, users can also examine daily summaries of their breathing problems. The Health app assists users in tracking and understanding their breathing patterns, which can be affected by several factors like alcohol, medicine, and sleeping posture.
The Cupertino-based company’s Apple Watch detection feature is powered by advanced machine learning algorithms, trained on a vast amount of data related to clinical-grade sleep apnea tests, and validated in a clinical study, showing that every participant was identified with at least mild sleep apnea.
By providing users with such health insights, Apple is enabling them to extract the data collected from the app and share it with healthcare professionals so that the required measures are taken as soon as possible.
Validated Health Information
The Watch sleep apnea feature is still awaiting marketing authorization from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and other global health authorities soon. Once approved, the feature will be available in over 150 countries starting this month.
The introduction of the sleep apnea feature on Apple Watches shows its commitment not only to improve wearable technologies, but also to address very important health issues worldwide.
