On April 10, OpenAI expanded its ChatGPT Memory feature capabilities, allowing the intelligent tool to recall users’ past conversations to provide more personalized and context-aware responses, allowing the tool to remember users’ details.
ChatGPT memory updated is currently rolling out to GPT Plus and Pro users worldwide, excluding the UK, EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland due to regulatory laws, with the OpenAI planning to extend access to Enterprise, Team, and EDU users – individuals associated with the educational institutions – in coming weeks.
Whether you’ve discussed your favorite writing style, career goals, or even a pet’s name, the ChatGPT memory feature can keep those details in mind moving forward to make interactions more tailored and consistent.
“This is a surprisingly great feature [in my opinion], and it points at something we are excited about: AI systems that get to know you over your life, and become extremely useful and personalized,” said CEO, Sam Altman, on X.
Previously, the ChatGPT new memory feature relied on what users told it directly or what it picked up on its own. Now, it combines “saved memories” information you choose to retain with more extensive context drawn from your conversation history. OpenAI calls this a more “comprehensive” approach to ChatGPT memory update.
According to the company, users will always have full control. If they choose to, users can turn memory off entirely or adjust it in Settings, as follows:
Settings > Personalization > Memory.
To view or delete ChatGPT’s saved content, select “Manage memories.” For personal questions, users can opt for the Temporary Chat feature that keeps chats out of memory.
Who and Where Will ChatGPT Pro Memory Feature Work
The new ChatGPT memory feature is live for Pro subscribers ($200/month), with Plus subscribers ($20/month) to follow next. Free-tier subscribers will wait longer, likely due to graphic processing units’ (GPU) limitations.
Altman’s X announcement gives a blurred picture of the AI companies ambitions to make its AI a personalized, evolving assistant, without really addressing the privacy violations of AI memorizing and mining sensitive personal data, creating a permanent records vulnerable to exposure, as users may not understand the scope of data retained by OpenAI – or how the AI giant is using their data.
By remembering your conversations, the ChatGPT memory management isn’t just answering its paying attention. For better or worse, that could mean the dawn of a more conversational, intelligent, and relationship-driven era of AI.
