Mercedes-Benz Partners with Google Cloud for Generative AI Assistant in CLA Model
Mercedes-Benz and Google are expected to debut an advanced AI automotive service in the Mercedes-Benz CLA for the first time later this year, establishing a new collaboration between the tech and automotive industries.
The new MBUX assistant, built on Google’s Gemini large language model (LLM) and powered by Vertex AI, will deliver dynamic, conversational interactions for surpassing existing capabilities for an even more advanced personalized automotive AI experience.
The new MBUX assistant, which was previewed for the first time at CES 2024, is a very different approach to what exists today.
AI Applications in Automotive Industry
The current MBUX supports about two-dozen base voice commands, relying on ChatGPT and Bing for information, functioning similarly to other virtual assistants.
The new automotive AI service supports multimodal and multilingual inputs, can engage in multi-turn conversations, and offers follow-up answers based on prior interactions; it feels more like a human conversation than a standard voice command system.
AI Services for Automotive Industries Features
One of the benefits of AI in automotive industry is that the AI Agent will provide more relevant and detailed responses. for example, during the drive, if the driver requests a list of Italian restaurants nearby, the agent will give him a list of places, their reviews, and list of popular dishes besides other useful information. This customized system enables the assistant to respond to the driver’s preference and requirement in real time.
The AI-powered MBUX assistant integrates with Google Maps for real-time accurate information on more than 250 million points of interest around the world, plus current traffic conditions, to make route guidance even more efficient.
This, in turn, provides AI automotive solutions that will enable a high-end technologically driven driving experience.
Future of AI in Automotive Industry
During a press statement, Ola Källenius, CEO of Mercedes-Benz Group AG said, “At Mercedes-Benz, we seek to offer our customers an exceptional digital experience,”.
“Our partnership with Google Cloud will further enhance in-car navigation, combining sophisticated location data with generative AI.”
The CLA will be the first Mercedes-Benz model to feature the advanced MBUX assistant. While future models’ rollout with the AI service remains unknown, the German automotive giant announced plans to expand this AI automotive service will bring forth a new era of intuitive and interactive in-car AI systems.
