Bugatti's New $4M, 1,800 HP Hybrid Car
Bugatti has just introduced its new Bugatti car, the Bugatti Tourbillon, a powerful hybrid vehicle with an impressive price tag of $4 million.
This new model is set to replace the $3.3 million, 1,500 horsepower Bugatti Chiron, continuing the brand’s legacy of high-performance luxury cars.
A Hybrid, Not Electric
While the auto industry is shifting towards electric vehicles, the Bugatti Tourbillon is a hybrid. This decision might come as a surprise, especially since Bugatti merged with Rimac, a company known for its all-electric supercars. However, Mate Rimac, CEO of Bugatti Rimac, stated that an all-electric Bugatti was never the plan. The aim was to maintain the essence of Bugatti’s mechanically powered cars, creating a powerful plug-in hybrid instead.
Powerful Engine and Electric Motors
The new Bugatti car, Bugatti Tourbillon will feature a massive 16-cylinder gas engine designed in collaboration with Cosworth, a British race car engineering firm. This engine will be supported by three electric motors, two in the front and one in the back, producing at least 800 horsepower. Combined, the Tourbillon will deliver an astonishing 1,800 horsepower.
The electric motors compensate for the absence of turbochargers in the new engine. Unlike the Chiron’s engine, which had four turbochargers, the Tourbillon’s engine is naturally aspirated. “We wanted to make the most exciting, most emotional combustion engine possible,” said Rimac, emphasizing a high-revving, naturally aspirated engine.
Unique Interior Design
The new Bugatti car, Tourbillon’s interior design pays homage to traditional machinery. Named after a set of gears used in mechanical watches to maintain accuracy, the car’s instrument display is modeled after watch dials. The central speedometer features two needles like clock hands, with one showing speed and the other indicating the engine’s revolutions per minute.
Modern Features with a Classic Touch
Despite its classic design elements, the Tourbillon includes modern features like a display screen with Apple CarPlay. However, in keeping with Bugatti’s philosophy of timeless design, the screen remains hidden unless requested by the driver. “We think, really, how will this product look in 50 years, 100 years,” Rimac explained, noting that screens can quickly look outdated.
Production and Availability
The Bugatti Tourbillon will be hand-assembled at Bugatti’s factory in Molsheim, France, with only 250 units planned for production. Each vehicle will start at approximately $4 million.
Final Thoughts
The Bugatti Tourbillon is a big step forward, mixing traditional mechanical skills with modern hybrid technology. As the car industry moves towards electric vehicles, Bugatti’s choice to make a hybrid car keeps the spirit of their famous engines alive. Combining high performance, advanced technology, and classic design, the new Bugatti car, Tourbillon is poised to make a big mark in the luxury car market.
