A Portrait of AI in the Olympics Games, Paris

Paris 2024 Olympics AI begins on the 26th of July with a handful of AI and technology that are embedded in this year's events.

The opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympics AI begins on the 26th of July with a handful of AI and technology that are embedded in this year’s events that run through the 11th of August.

In the Olympic Games, the top positions are held by creativity and exceptionalism. But this year, we are set to witness a change that goes beyond sports, presenting an elegant merger between what’s digital and physical.

In recent years, AI proved itself to be of transformative power that accelerated the embrace of massive change in the manner the Olympics games are perceived and organized.

From real-time analytics in 2020, to athlete performance and logistics, AI has been making a difference in the Olympics. This year’s Olympics event isn’t just about sports; it’s about giving people the chance to indulge in the wonders of technology. This year, tech in the Olympics will set the bar for future Olympian generations and games.

Involvement of AI/ Tech Uses in the Olympics

In an eye-catching event such as the Olympics AI of 2024, we decided to consolidate all the techs used this year, and give you, our dear readers, a peek into the biggest technologies adopted. And as usual, AI is definitely taking the lead.

  • NBC Paris Coverage

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has partnered with Alibaba Cloud to apply AI technology at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games for sustainability improvement. This means that, through the Energy Expert solution, this will help in getting accurate analysis of power consumption and planning in all 35 competition venues.

The IOC will have a user-friendly dashboard by merging all energy-related data to provide insights into electricity usage and help with forecasting impacts and measuring progress. To gather real time data and offer venue specific recommendations for optimizing power demand and reducing wastage, the system will use about 100 smart electric meters due to its accuracy and the fact that it uses small amounts of energy.

  • AI Micheals

Peacock will air “Your Daily Olympic Recap” with personalized algorithms that recreate the voice of a legendary sportscaster, Al Michaels. Through this AI-based method, users will get daily highlights from around the Olympics in an announcer’s tone likened to that of video games.

By providing their names, choosing up to three favorite sports and selecting highlight types, users can set it up on the Peacock app. Content for accuracy is reviewed by a team composed of NBCU editors. This voice has been trained using NBC appearances made by Michaels and about 7 million recap versions are expected by NBC during the games. The service commences on July 27th and personalized recaps start from July 28th.

  • Google’s Official US AI-Sponsorship

Starting July 26th, Google will officially be the AI sponsor of Team USA for the Olympics in 2024. This comes with a partnership with NBCUniversal that will fully be able to exhibit Google’s AI-powered tools during the tournament broadcasts. For example, the 3D views of the Olympic venues through Immersive Views on Google Maps and detailed events’ information at each location.

Broadcasters shall use Google Search AI Overviews in explaining about Olympics AI and Paralympics. Comedian Leslie Jones will learn new sports with Gemini AI in scripted sections while five athletes will appear in promotional videos sensitive to Google’s AI tools to explore Paris.

End Point

Thinking of the latest ups and downs we’ve seen since AI became the new big thing, the overall sentiment is that the adoption of AI should be as this one. For the greater good and uniting people together. Intelligent technologies such as AI are bringing out a better image of themselves in the Olympics. While there aren’t any AI Olympians, in this case however, AI is just a facilitator in the event, making it better, more eye-catching, and most importantly, eco-conscious. One hopes that the future of AI continues to maintain this growth and means of adoption, rather than having the technology be facilitators of joblessness.

It’s another day and another step for a wider embrace of intelligent technologies on French territory.
