The Thought of Banning Social Media
Social media has become a significant pillar in our times; However, many major issues were faced while using it. Many governments were affected as well, and their democracy was questioned. Therefore, the following paragraph will discuss why governments think that social media should be banned.
Many governments that ban or plan to ban social media platforms, like X, often don’t want people to criticize the system, so they are left with no other choice but to maintain political stability in the country or impose traditional social values.
For example, Venezuelan President banned X for 10 days because it promotes hate and civilian conflict in times of elections.
Iran on the other hand is limiting foreign platforms and focusing on creating local applications that abide by the regulations of the country.
Restricting social media platforms have become more common in the past year, especially after the war in Gaza escalated, users noticed that their accounts are getting restricted because they are sharing the truth, Crucial information is being hided, Personal data is used without consent etc.
This Manipulation has led many governments targeted by social media to take a step back and rethink if social media should be banned in their countries. If the purpose of social media is to divide people, manipulate the truth, criticize systems and share misinformation, then countries are more than happy to ban it.
