Social Media Platform X’s Lawsuit Against CCDH Rejected
A Federal Judge recently threw out the social media lawsuit of the platform X brought against the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH), a research organization that focuses on online hate speech.
The court determined that the main reason behind this lawsuit was an attempt to strike back at the nonprofit for its critical analysis of the company owned by Elon Musk.
Last summer, X initiated its social media lawsuit against the CCDH. It claimed that the organization improperly had access to its platform to conduct a fear-inducing campaign aimed at weakening its advertising revenue.
CCDH released findings claiming that the social media platform was not taking action on reports related to hate speech. In some instances, X was in fact promoting such content.
In his ruling, Federal Judge Charles Breyer emphasized that the lawsuit was primarily intended to penalize CCDH for its investigative work. He also noted that X’s decision to pursue legal action was not driven by the actual impact of the so-called scraping on its platform. The suit was rather about protecting the company’s reputation from the negative impact.
Breyer pointed out that, through the legal case, X was attempting to punish CCDH for its publications and possibly to discourage similar actions by others. The platform then expressed that it’s willing to challenge the court’s decision.
CCDH’s CEO, Imram Ahmed, welcomed the judgment, stating it upheld the organization’s rights to conduct research, express opinions, advocate for change, and hold social media lawsuit firms accountable for their internal decisions. Ahmed emphasized the necessity of enacting federal laws that would obligate digital platforms to grant access to their data for independent research purposes.
