The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) issued a warning of multiple vulnerabilities found in web security in Chrome and ChromeOS that could expose users’ personal data to cybercriminals, enabling system hijacking, data theft, and Denial of Service (DoS) attacks.
The vulnerabilities highlight key weaknesses in web security, allowing hackers to compromise sensitive information and disrupt systems, with CERT-in revealing a need for users to update their browsers and operating systems to mitigate these threats and protect themselves.
Google Chrome Browser Security
Google has acknowledged the vulnerabilities in web security in Chrome and released fixes for effected devices, but Google has chosen not to disclose specific details to prevent malicious actors from exploiting any Google chrome security flaw on devices that haven’t yet updates.
“Access to bug details and links may be kept restricted until a majority of users are updated with a fix,” Google said.
To strengthen ecosystem security and address security problems with Google Chrome, the tech giant is offering security researchers $7,500 for reporting flaws in ChromeOS, and up to $150,000 for identifying any Google chrome security issue in the browser.
Cybercriminals can exploit vulnerabilities in both Chrome and ChromeOS with a variety of malicious activities, therefore the security problems with Google chrome become clearer and immediate actions are needed.
Google has also released an Android security patch update to remove two zero-day vulnerabilities previously exploited by cybercriminals in certain regions – the update will close these gaps and protect Android users.
Zero-day vulnerabilities are especially dangerous as they are unknown flaws hackers exploit before vendors can address them. Security experts suspect nation-state actors, possibly using tools like Cellebrite’s mobile forensics software, may have leveraged this Google Chrome security vulnerability for targeted attacks.
