AI Appears in Weaving Industry

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is taking the lead in assisting in the production of Talim coded carpets in India.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is taking the lead in assisting in the production of Talim coded carpets in India.

Every Kashmir handwoven carpet has a special imperfect perfect pattern. An ancient symbolic code lies within every pattern of the carpet. This pattern is called Talim. The codes have been used and presented for over hundreds of years to design and weave every unique piece of carpet.

Every section of the Talim represents a small piece of the carpet. This means that hundreds would be working on the weaving of the carpet. It is quite obvious at this point how long the process takes to produce one carpet.

The Latest Innovation

Technology companies have been integrating artificial intelligence into the process and are the sources of the most recent innovation. Aby Mathew, chief operating officer of International Virtual Assistance, a data analysis-focused computer software company, has made many statements regarding the use of AI in this industry.

Mathew’s company is using images of carpets and Talim code lines to teach an artificial intelligence (AI) system how to decipher the code. Mr. Mathew claims that by decoding the talim instructions for the weavers, the AI should speed up manufacturing, even though it is still in the early stages of development and will still require human coders.

“Weavers will be able to try out new patterns, update classic themes to suit contemporary tastes, and produce one-of-a-kind, custom carpets,” stated Mr. Mathew.

This is due to the increase in the richness of the Indian communities, which means the demand for traditional carpets has increased as well.

“The tastes of customers are evolving, with a growing desire for carpets that are fashionable, long-lasting, and low maintenance. Conventional carpet-making techniques are frequently labor-intensive and sluggish – they might not be able to satisfy these needs,” says Mr. Mathew.

The point behind it all is to decrease the time for producing carpets and increase the amount of carpets and revenue made from selling them.

The Grand Finale

It is a known fact that even AI does commit mistakes. The question here is that will AI be able to intentionally do the Persian flaw? The Persian flaw is the mistake that the Persian carpet makers do in order to create a unique statement to every carpet piece. Another reason behind this flaw is a religious one.  AI is designed to remove the flaw from flawless, but the issue here is how beneficial is this AI trait in carpet making?

The uniqueness to every carpet lies within the pattern and the imperfection that every weaver makes but also it lies within the effort of time that it took for it to be produced.
