Google Teases New AI Camera Feature Ahead of I/O Conference

Google has given a sneak peek of its upcoming AI camera feature, just a day before the I/O developer conference.

In a short video posted on X, Google showcased a new camera powered AI feature that can identify objects in real time. The video was labeled as a “prototype” and features a Pixel device with the camera active and directed towards the I/O keynote.

In a way to demonstrate the feature, the person behind the camera asked if it could identify what was happening at the moment. The response generated by the voice indicated that it seems a big event is being planned.

What stands out in this demo is that the AI feature was also able to recognize the IO letters that refer to Google’s developer conference. It also mentioned “new advancements in artificial intelligence.” Meanwhile, as the conversation between both voices continues, a transcription of it appears on the screen.

This new feature shows some similarities to the company’s camera-powered search feature, Google Lens. However, the teasing demo highlights that it works in real time, which is actually much like the multimodal AI in Meta’s smart glasses.

Not only that, but the use of the Pixel device to unveil this new advancement was done on purpose, as Google typically launches its AI-powered features on its Pixel lineup first.

Speaking of Google’s decision to post a teaser of this feature, it is an unusual move, yet a strategic one. The timing is notable, as it aligns with OpenAI’s event scheduled on the same day to unveil comparable capabilities through its latest version of GPT, the GPT-4o. This also indicates a competitive lead in AI.

Although the specific details related to this new AI powered camera feature are yet to be revealed, it is as clear as day that the Alphabet company is going further in its innovation within the AI field. The I/O developer conference will be held on May 14, 2024.
