AI Will Kill Us. All of Us.

The U.S. State Department conducted a new report with cybersecurity experts underscoring the disastrous threats.

The U.S. State Department conducted a new report with cybersecurity experts underscoring the disastrous threats associated with the swift advancement of AI, highlighting potential threat of this technology on humanity, global security, as well as the possibility of human extinction.

The outcomes of this report were drawn up by interviewing over 200 individuals, including executives from well-known AI companies, cybersecurity experts, as well as national security officials.

The report released by Gladstone AI warns that advanced AI systems could pose a significant risk of human extinction.

Moreover, it alerts about the ability for advanced AI systems to be armed, leading to unalterable harm. The report also underscores that even researchers are raising concerns of not being able to have full control over these systems in the labs during experimentation, which may lead to catastrophic implications for global security.

According to the report, the advancement of AI could disrupt global security, same as nuclear weapons. It also stresses concerns about the potential for AI weaponry to cause catastrophic events, surpassing those associated with weapons of mass destruction.

However, the report highlights that competitive pressures are compelling companies to accelerate the development of AI technologies, potentially compromising both safety and security. This will increase the possibility of more advanced AI systems being stolen and utilized against the U.S.

In an interview with CNN a U.S. State Department official stated that Gladstone AI was chosen to conduct this report this due to its ongoing evaluation of how artificial intelligence brings into line with the objective of safeguarding U.S. interests locally and worldwide. He emphasized that the report does not reflect the views of the U.S. government.

For his part, Jeremie Harris, CEO and co-founder of Gladstone AI, emphasized the transformative power of AI but also cautioned about its significant risks, stating that once AI reaches a certain level of capability, it could potentially become uncontrollable.

Harris called for new radical steps to confront the threats of artificial intelligence, including imposing emergency regulatory measures and restrictions on the power of AI models under development.

For almost a year, Geoffrey Hinton, known as the “Godfather of Artificial Intelligence,” resigned from his position at Google and sounded the alarm about the technology he helped develop. He mentioned that there is a 10% probability that artificial intelligence will result in human extinction within the next thirty years.

Many leaders within the AI industry, academics, and others, including Hinton have signed a statement in June asserting that addressing the risks of extinction that may be caused by AI should be a global priority.
