If algorithms are made to destroy decisions, the world will have to struggle with questions such as, ‘who is liable for civilian deaths caused by faulty code? Can software commit a war crime?’
Given the measure, leaders might be forced to regulate AI warfare ahead of broader AI governance mechanisms applied elsewhere, and war might end up being the driving force for overdue AI regulation.
Algorithmic Warfare Is Coming
The wars of the future which no one hopes for will no longer be defined by power but by algorithmic warfare power. As troops increasingly turn to machines, swarms of robots, and AI-driven quantum-based decision-making, this has become a new arms race, written not in soldier rounds but rather in lines of code.
If the algorithm in wars becomes the first frontier to be controlled on an international level, it can set a precedent for the rest of the AI domains from medicine to law enforcement to even banking. Time is ticking and the world is in desperate need of action. The regulation must keep pace with the machines before they get too far ahead.
