Former CIA Analyst Admits to Leaking National Defense Information

On October 17, 2024, former CIA analyst Asif William Rahman leaked classified CIA documents and top-secret national defense information, triggering one of the most significant national security breaches in recent history.

The case of Mr. Rahman sketches the role national defense information protection plays within the US intelligence apparatus. A contrast from how, in these modern times, sensitive data, including leaked documents from CIA, spreads within minutes via social media, mostly with disastrous consequences, in an age-old battle for transparency versus security.

The breach really calls into question what might be found deep inside national defense systems and the need to adopt more aggressive measures against insider threats.

Trust Theft and National Security

Rahman, who joined the CIA in 2016 with a Top-Secret designation, leaked classified CIA documents to which Rahman gained access, included plans from US foreign allies with respect to adversaries.

According to court documents, he printed out and photographed sensitive files on October 17, 2024, in order to transmit the leaked CIA document to unauthorized parties. By the next day, the information was all over the media platforms.

“Mr. Rahman betrayed the trust of the American people by unlawfully sharing classified national defense information he swore an oath to protect,” said Assistant Attorney General Matthew G. Olsen of the Justice Department’s National Security Division. Olsen added that the Justice Department would continue to hold accountable those who violated the security of the United States.

Federal officials say that the leak put lives at risk, damaged relationships with foreign partners, and disrupted intelligence efforts.

Prosecutors said Rahman took active efforts to cover his tracks, including destroying key electronic devices, such as a mobile phone and an internet router, by throwing the devices into public trash receptacles. Those efforts did not save him, however, when the FBI arrested him on November 12, 2024, at CIA headquarters, following evidence of CIA classified documents leaked.

“With today’s plea, Asif Rahman acknowledges he betrayed the trust of his country,” said Robert Wells, Executive Assistant Director of the FBI’s National Security Branch.

Wellner underlined how grave were the risks created by CIA documents leaked to the United States and its allies. Rahman pleaded guilty to two counts under the Espionage Act for willful retention of classified information and transmission. For a first offender, sentencing would be as many as 10 years. Sentencing by a federal judge based on statutory guidelines of the classified CIA documents will be performed on May 15, 2025.
