Meta Now Lets Users Create Their Own AI Avatars

Meta launched in the US its latest AI release, AI Studio, giving users the opportunity to create and share custom AI characters.

Meta launched on the 29th of July in the US its latest AI release, AI Studio, giving users the opportunity to create, share and discover how they can present themselves as custom AI characters through avatars, based on its Llama 3.1 technology.

The AI Studio allows users to create custom AI characters for different purposes including Instagram captions, cooking tips or memes creation, and can be shared on Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp web.

Users can create an AI character on ai.meta.com/ai-studio or within the Instagram app by giving it a name, personality type, avatar image and a tagline.  Once you build your custom AI character, it can teach the user to cook, play games with you, give you tips for movies, and anything that speaks to your interest.

AI studio will automate common questions responses from Instagram creators and enable them to interact with fans more effectively. Creators can customize their AI’s responses and control their interactions through Instagram’s professional dashboard. In this case, AI Studio will boost user engagement and creativity while ensuring safety and responsible AI use. This step represents wider integration of AI into social media platforms.

However, same as always in Meta’s case, users still have questions regarding the safety and security of their information.

Beware the Red Flags

Meta has been under the spotlight for quite some time regarding the safety and security of their users’ safety and privacy measures.

The new custom AI studio can customize your responses “based on things like their Instagram content, facts about themselves, and topics to avoid,” according to Meta, meaning the information collection is done in an artistic and subtle way.

Facebook parent seems to be underestimating the intelligence of their users – or perhaps not. Maybe Meta knows and is quite sure that no matter what feature is introduced to its platforms, users will use it even when they clearly know their information is harvested and used for AI model training. As we all know, no user can go a day without using at least two Meta platforms, be it Instagram, Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp, amongst the others.

The question goes to Meta users, of which I am a part: can we survive and be entertained without Meta platforms?

We can continue to use different Meta platforms and features, but maybe the trick is to limit the information we share on these platforms. We should also be cautious about discussing anything near our phones because, as times have evolved, so have sayings. We used to shush each other and say the walls have ears, but now we shush each other because our phones have ears. Try saying or even thinking about one thing next to your smartphone, and then notice how your algorithm generates posts and ads based on that.
