Canada Under Cyber Attacks by the Chinese

Canada's Communications Security Establishment identified Chinese cyber operations as the country's most significant threat.

Canada’s Communications Security Establishment identified Chinese cyber operations as the country’s most significant threat impacting both political and commercial sectors.

China’s cyber program is presented as the significant state sponsored threat to Canada, saying this campaign was part of a bigger aggressive strategy to infiltrate world technologies and information. As the Communications Security Establishment Canada concluded in its latest threat assessment, Beijing’s cyber operations often target not only the political but the commercial sectors as well, underscoring an increase in China’s levels of digital espionage.

“The PRC’s expansive and aggressive cyber program presents the most sophisticated and active state cyber threat to Canada today,” stated a report by the CSE. Technical capability, scale of operations, and vision place China in a class unto itself.

The report did not only include China, but also cyber threats showing Russian and Iranian attacks that exhibited the state actors trio working heftily to destabilize Canada and its allies.

Methods of China have often been underhand, relying on theft of intellectual property, espionage, and political influence, that of Russia is usually disruptive. The cyber operations carried out by both states have outlined the consistent challenges Canada faces in securing its digital borders against multidimensional cyber threats.

Stronger Alliances Stronger Future

Canada is an internationally known as peacekeeper, but the evolving cyber operations environment requires nations to keep up to date. Good relations with various allies who are mature on a cybersecurity level could provide strategic benefits in protecting Canada.

The Canadian government on the other hand is collaborating on strengthening its defensive and offensive cyber capabilities with allies such as the US, the UK, and European countries will be more able to manage and prevent cyber campaigns from its adversaries.

Partnerships such as this would also help facilitate information exchange, enhance threat detection, and response systems which will make it nearly impossible for state actors to abuse Canada’s cyber operations space. Quebec’s cyber national security strategy will need to improve its work in order to decrease the risks on the country. With a more complex and grave national cubic security threat, Canada’s response may be to build an extending network of partners in order to preserve its national security and democratic order which are essential to the development of Canada.

Future Considerations

Canada has tough times ahead as it protects various areas of its national security in the presence of various cybersecurity threats. Given the fact that China, Russia, and Iran are all actively attempting to hack Canadian systems, security efforts are needed at this stage. By expanding its technological involvement, Canada would be able to partner with cybersecurity tech leaders to protect its systems and maintain political order in the presence of state geared cyber operations.
