Did Comium Set a Trap for Africell and Qcell or Did They Trap Themselves?

In Gambia’s fast-evolving mobile operator market, a fierce price war has broken out between Africell, QCell, and Comium.

In Gambia’s fast-evolving mobile operator market, a fierce price war has broken out between Africell, QCell, and Comium.

It began when QCell surprised everyone by slashing their prices by 80% overnight. Comium reacted quickly, slightly undercutting QCell, prompting Africell to respond with even lower rates. What followed was a week-long spiral, as Africell and QCell relentlessly undercut each other, pushing prices down by more than 90%.

Comium then made a surprising and calculated move: it stepped back. Rather than compete in a self-destructive price war, Comium chose stability. It held firm to its pricing strategy, positioning itself as a premium provider with superior network quality.

This strategic pause was no accident. Comium had prepared for this moment long before, its lean operational model and significantly lower cost structure gave it a unique advantage: the ability to weather market chaos without compromising service.

Did Comium Add Fuel to the Fire?

That’s the key question: when QCell dropped its prices, did Comium tactically respond just enough to push Africell into the ring, triggering a war between its two biggest rivals, then stepping aside as they battled it out? Whether intentional or not, Comium’s restraint allowed it to emerge as the most stable player in the market. Meanwhile, Africell and QCell now face a serious dilemma.

Can they sustain these deep financial losses? And if they attempt to raise prices again, how will subscribers, many of whom saw the massive discounts as bait, respond? The damage to consumer trust may already be done.

Moreover, when operators like QCell and Africell lower their prices by more than 90%, it will lead to lower network quality. Could two of the top mobile operators in The Gambia be willing to compromise quality only to win a price war?

A Well-Planned Strategy

What sets Comium apart is foresight. Its leadership had long anticipated such a pricing war and had a contingency plan ready. By building a highly efficient operation without sacrificing quality, Comium ensured that it could survive, and even thrive, during periods of extreme market volatility. This strategy has paid off: Comium has risen from a low-ranked operator to Gambia’s number one operator, thanks to disciplined execution and team resilience.

Who’s Really Winning?

Today, the upper hand clearly belongs to Comium and its subscribers who were loyal to their favorite operator, as everyone knows Comium was the first to bring down prices in The Gambia, making data affordable for everyone regardless of their financial situation, and ensuring both high-income and low-income individuals can access internet services. The financial bleeding is happening at Africell and QCell, while Comium continues business as usual, unaffected and increasingly favored by customers. There are murmurs that Africell and QCell may soon appeal to the regulator, PURA, hoping for intervention to stabilize prices and restore market equilibrium. But even if that happens, public trust once broken, is hard to regain.

Rumors are circulating that Comium feels unfairly treated among local mobile operators as it has 50% less spectrum and fewer range numbers than QCell and Africell.

Comium is not asking for favors, it is simply demanding its rightful share. The company strongly emphasizes the need for fairness and equality across the sector, ensuring that all operators can compete on a level playing field.

As long as this imbalance in spectrum and range number allocation persists, Comium will continue to be at a disadvantage and will remain wronged.

PURA, as the regulatory authority, is the most trusted institution by all mobile operators. Comium places its trust in PURA to ensure that all operators are treated equally, with no one having an unfair advantage, particularly when it comes to the allocation of spectrum and range numbers.

In the end, the market will decide who survives on the long run. But one thing is already clear: Comium’s calm, calculated, and well-prepared approach is working. In telecom, just like in chess, it’s not always the flashiest or most aggressive move that wins. Often, it’s the smartest.
