du and Huawei aim for net zero

The customer-facing name of Emirates Integrated Telecommunications Company, du, is making headlines again as a model corporate citizen. In collaboration with Huawei, the UAE’s challenger telco brand is upgrading diesel generators to significantly reduce carbon footprint.

Despite some network problems that dogged its introduction in 2007 as a competitor to Etisalat, du has evolved as a world class telecoms operator. Key to its success has been a commitment to always place the customer at the heart of everything it does.  As a result, the brand has garnered enormous trust with competitive consumer offerings, a comprehensive enterprise division and a heightened sense of community.

In Line with Sustainability Protocols

This latest initiative will further entrench du’s self-imposed obligation to set the standard for the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 initiative.

Hybrid power units with lithium batteries will power the generator sites. The sheer volume of upgraded sites – over 300 – will reduce emissions by 10,000 tons a year. As far as the atmosphere is concerned, that’s like half a million trees being planted annually. It is scarcely calculable the benefit this will have to cleaner air and, of course, flora and fauna ecosystems. As green initiatives go, this ranks as a significant marker in the GCC state.

Saleem AlBlooshi, Chief Technology Officer at du noted “This initiative not only lowers our carbon footprint but also ensures the delivery of more eco-friendly and sustainable services to communities in even the most remote desert regions.”

He went on to say “Our unwavering commitment to environmental responsibility reflects our determination to contribute to a greener and more sustainable future for all.”

Upgrading diesel generators will occur across the seven Emirates that comprise the federation of the UAE, mainly in remote areas. The UAE itself covers 83,600 square kilometres. The capital is Abu Dhabi and the main economic hub is in adjacent Dubai.
