Heeyo AI Chatbot Layers Safety and Fun Learning for Kids

A Palo Alto-based startup, Heeyo, has developed an AI chatbot that enables children from ages three to eleven years to engage.

A Palo Alto-based startup, Heeyo, has developed an AI chatbot that enables children from ages three to eleven years to engage in over 2,000 interactive games and activities.

The platform’s games and activities include books, trivia, role-playing adventure games. It also gives the opportunity for parents and kids to further design their AI, design new learning games based on the values and interests of the family, offering a fun and safe alternative to playing games.

Heeyo is backed by several companies and investors, such as OpenAI Startup Fund, Alexa Fund, Pear VC, and other investors.

Children’s Safety Top of the List

In an exclusive interview with TechCrunch, the startup’s CEO, Xiaoyin Qu, said that it is true that the idea of AI talking to children may sound creepy or even dangerous, assuring that at the main goal of Heeyo’s product is to make sure safety of children is provided.

To do so, the AI chatbot abides by the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) by deleting the voices of children instantly and never preserving any personal data. Upon signing up, AI will never ask for a kid’s full name or any personal details.

Qu explained that in her childhood, her parents lacked knowledge to help her in the learning process and teachers were busy too, which pushed her to think about developing this kind of chatbot to be a coach for children.

“That’s why I wanted to build an AI that can help provide every single kid with their own dedicated coach and playmate that can chat with them and help the kids learn,” Qu told TechCrunch.

Filling the Gap

By providing a safe and engaging experience for kids, Heeyo is breaking into a market many other companies would prefer to avoid. Entering such a market will allow the startup to take a special place in the industry addressing a need that larger tech companies have not been able to meet.

“There are a billion kids that fall into our demographic right now, and as you can imagine, none of the Big Tech providers are actually supporting this age, whether it’s because they think it’s too much trouble, because they would have to be [COPPA] compliant, or because they think there may be less money in it,” said Qu, “But they’re not supporting those kids at all. So that’s a huge market.”

A recent report from New York University remarked on how digital play could be a source of impact on children in respect of autonomy, confidence, and identity.

Heeyo has a content team that includes children’s book authors, former creatives from Nickelodeon and Sesame Workshop, child psychologists, and pediatricians to design these games in wat these outcomes. Its AI engine combines different models for chatting, story generation, and creation of interactive content to create age-appropriate activities.

Final Thoughts

Heeyo is a great new approach to digital learning for children. Not only is it driven by AI, interactive, and educational content, but the platform also fills a serious gap left by large technology companies in the industry.

What sets this AI chatbot apart from others is that the core of its products is based on safety by adhering to COPPA. At the same time, its success will come from Heeyo’s continuous ability to adapt to the divergent needs of both children and parents. This approach not only provides attention toward the development and well-being of children but can also represent the positive possibilities of AI in making meaningful and educational digital experiences.
