Google Steps Up India AI with Gemini and Other Local Features

Google is strengthening its focus on India’s tech market by expanding its India AI efforts, the company announced at its 10th annual Google for India event, to better serve India, the world’s most populous country, as part of a broader strategy to increase its presence in the region.

India AI’s Top Improvements

At the event, Google introduced its AI model, Gemini, which will enhance search, visual recognition, and language processing; all essential capabilities in a very diverse market, where voice command support and multilingual features are necessary. Curiously, more than 40% of Gemini’s users in India use voice to communicate with it, and that is why Google brought about Gemini Live. Converse in Hindi naturally and fluently, this voice assistant will also support eight other Indian languages, including Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Telugu, Tamil, and Urdu.

To make India AI experience better, Google also intends to add more Indian languages-Bengali, Marathi, Telugu, and Tamil-in the coming weeks to the generative AI tool for search AI Overviews. Although AI Overviews in Hindi received mixed reviews earlier, this makes no difference to the plans of the company to better its offerings.

Most notably, Google Lens has been popular in India, with the tech giant innovating in its visual search by testing video-based searches that let users ask detailed questions about moving objects. While India AI may seem a little behind in the generative AI landscape, it is still open to tech giants, having much area to cover. With 700 to 800 million users in India, an extended user base of Google presents a great opportunity to take India AI further and speed it up even more.

In addition to other developments, Google Maps will introduce new AI-powered features aimed specifically at Indian users, including AI-written summaries of locations and the ability to search for specific experiences, rather than just places.

Google’s ambitious goal is to analyze billions of reviews and images to transform Maps into an all-encompassing discovery platform for local businesses and attractions, making it a more dynamic tool for users seeking tailored experiences.

Google has announced new AI-powered features to help Indian supplier improve their digital presence and some features involve AI-generated video animations from static product images in the Merchant Center to allow businesses to create more engaging online profiles of themselves.

An automated system will convert restaurant menus into formatted online listings and enable merchants to promote deals from their social media accounts alongside popular aggregators such as Zomato and Swiggy.

The Alphabet-owned company has also proposed a set of frameworks that could help profit from India AI. According to a rough estimate of the technology giant, AI could unlock about $4 trillion additional economic value for India by 2030. The proposal underlines the need for investments in computing capacity, open datasets, modernization of skills programs, and calls for inclusive access to AI and increased adoption by government entities and small businesses.

“We stand at a pivotal moment in the development of artificial intelligence (AI) in India. India’s outstanding tech talent, growing economy and vibrant start-up ecosystem mean that the country is well placed to fulfil its potential for AI global leadership,” Google claimed.

This significant step, however, will form threats on foreign tech giants especially for U.S.  tech firms and could affect their markets, accordingly, leading to increased competition and decreased dominance of US tech companies.
