2023 has been a tumultuous year full of fluctuations in the tech world and for leaders in technology yet many have made a big difference in their companies and in our lives.

Based on a formula of revenue growth, employee-satisfaction surveys and stringent environmental standards, Microsoft, Apple, Alphabet (Google‘s parent company), and Meta Platforms (Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp) were the top four companies in a new statistical ranking of 750 of the world’s best companies by Statista and TIME.

Have you heard the saying “behind every great man is a greater woman”, in this context it the saying changes to “behind every great tech company there are greater leaders in technology.”

Satya Nadella

Satya Narayana Nadella serves as the CEO of Microsoft, leading the company to a nearly trillion-dollar market capitalization. Under his leadership, Microsoft has achieved more subscribers than Netflix and generated more revenue from cloud computing than Google. Significant changes marked Nadella’s tenure as CEO. These included releasing Microsoft Office for Apple’s iPad, launching iPhone and Android apps like Microsoft Outlook, skipping Windows 9 in favor of Windows 10, acquiring Mojang (the company behind Minecraft), and introducing the Microsoft Surface Book, the company’s first laptop.

Elon Musk

Elon Musk is co-founder of six businesses, SpaceX, a rocket manufacturer, Tesla, and the tunneling startup Boring Company. With stock and options, he owns about 21% of Tesla, but he has pledged more than half of his shares as security for up to $3.5 billion in personal loans. In 2023, Musk got into several entanglements on his social media platform X. A major tweet that got him into a huge entanglement that resulted in Musk losing advertisers on the platform.

Tim Cook

Tim Cook Apple’s CEO and member of board of directors was appointed 12 years ago. This happened following Steve Jobs’ passing. This year, Cook announced his intention to step down, expressing his preference for an internal employee to succeed him as CEO. Could Cook make it as one of the greatest leaders in technology?

In addition to serving on Alphabet’s board of directors, Sundar Pichai is the CEO of both Google and Alphabet. Under his leadership, Google has focused on creating products and services that harness the latest advancements in artificial intelligence, catering to both major and minor needs.

In 2004, Mark Zuckerberg, the founder, CEO and chairman of Meta, rebranded the company as Facebook. Mark is responsible for determining the overall direction and product strategy of the company. He is involved in the design of Meta’s services and the development of the company’s core technologies and infrastructure.

Though Meta and its activities are frequently in the news, Zuckerberg is rarely featured in any of the images. This year, Meta has faced numerous challenges, such as introducing new features to attract more users, combating misinformation that required intervention by the EU, and experiencing a 17.36% decrease in its employee count.

Sam Altman

A bonus CEO is the one of the leaders in technology is Sam Altman, whose name is synonymous with OpenAI. Sam Altman had been the CEO of OpenAI since 2019. However, in 2023, he was dismissed, which caused a stir worldwide. On November 17, Altman was removed from his position as CEO and from the OpenAI board. Board members cited a lack of ‘consistent candor in his communications’ as the reason. Following employee outcry, he was swiftly reinstated as CEO, but he has not yet returned to the board.

Insidetelecom would like to coin Sam Altman one of the greatest leaders in technology. Why is this so, you may wonder? Well, simply put, it was his year. Altman was the turning point in artificial intelligence, making OPENAI grow into an $80 billion company.
