Mastercard Unveils Password-Free, Cardless Checkout for Seamless Payments
Mastercard biometric aims to revolutionize digital shopping by 2030, removing the need for physical card numbers and traditional passwords.
According to payment giant, the broad-reaching plan contemplates a future of online transactions that are both seamless and highly secure through the adoption of tokenization and biometric authentication.
The new change from Mastercard will allow users to confirm purchases by on-device biometrics, including fingerprint or facial recognition to push users’ privacy and eliminate data risks.
“From manual entry to passwords, and to seamless and secure payments with just a few clicks, ” said Jorn Lambert, Chief Product Officer at Mastercard, reinstalling the commitment of the company toward making online payments quicker and safer for all.
Forwarding Security Through Biometrics
Mastercard’s vision pertains to tokenization expansion – technology the company introduced a decade ago to protect sensitive payment data.
Today, 25% of all transactions globally are tokenized, and in countries like India, full adoption in e-commerce has almost been achieved. Tokenization is to be combined with Mastercard biometric payment authentication to allow seamless checkouts and cut fraud, which is seven times higher online compared to physical stores.
Tokenization has already affected consumer behavior by decreasing cart abandonment, increasing transaction approvals by 3-6% in various regions, and adding $2 billion in monthly sales for merchants each month, according to Mastercard.
“As payments continue to be embedded across various commerce experiences, we’re leading the way to a global economy that empowers everyone,” Lambert added.
Building Partnerships for a Global Rollout
Reaching this ambition of reinventing online shopping requires a level of collaboration across the payments ecosystem that Mastercard must have. Its Mastercard biometric Gateway, bundling these new technologies together, has partnered with banks, merchants, and payment service providers on the drive for wide-scale adoption.
In India, Singapore, and the United Arab Emirates alone, millions of consumers have already been able to realize secure, seamless online purchases, thanks to its Payment Passkey Service. In addition, new partnerships with key banks and retailers such as Axis Bank, BigBasket, and PayU are scaling this technology around the world.
Mastercard is also expanding its Mastercard biometric checkout service with issuers including Commonwealth Bank of Australia and Santander Mexico. Consumers increasingly are making use of numberless card payments Mastercard in everyday purchases from major brands, including Just Eat Takeaway.com and Pizza Hut.
The giant’s 2030 vision is one step further in the long journey of innovation that Mastercard biometric has undertaken in an effort to modernize digital payments. The company did away with the magnetic stripe on physical cards back in 2021.
