Meta to Use Nuclear Power for US AI Data Centers in Sustainable Push 

Meta reported highly ambitious plans for a nuclear data center to begin sourcing power for US data centers that power AI projects

Late last week, Meta reported highly ambitious plans for a nuclear data center to begin sourcing power for US data centers that power AI projects from nuclear reactors in the early 2030s, according to a blog post.  

Accordingly, Meta called for proposals from nuclear developers, it wants to add around one to four gigawatts of capacity to support infrastructure that is growing. 

Meta’s request for nuclear powered data center proposals targets partners experienced in SMRs or larger reactors, signaling its interest in diversifying energy sources for its expanding data center network. 

Meta’s Push for Sustainable Power Solutions 

The Meta nuclear data center step is to secure reliable, sustainable energy solutions for the company’s large infrastructure. The company believes that a nuclear power can play a pivotal role in supporting both its data centers and the local communities around them. 

In a statement, Meta explained that nuclear energy in its nuclear data center could help meet the growing energy demands of its platforms while supporting the broader electric grid.  

“As new innovations bring impactful technological advancements across sectors and support economic growth, we believe that nuclear energy can help provide firm, baseload power to support the growth needs of the electric grids that power both our data centers as well as the communities around them,” the company in its post. 

The Long Path of Building Its Nuclear Data Center 

Meta had earlier explored the option of building a nuclear powered data center, but that plan was stopped earlier this year after a rare species of bees was found near the site. 

 Despite that, the company remained committed to the idea of using nuclear energy to fuel its operations in the future. The new Meta nuclear data center proposal is an indication of long-term investment in clean, reliable power sources. 

Yet, Meta is not alone in this development to introduce nuclear into their energy mix. Other big tech companies such as Google and Microsoft also voiced similar plans to power their expanding AI models projects. 

Google, Microsoft Introduce Plans for Nuclear Projects 

In a similar move, Google recently announced plans to build several nuclear reactors in the US, adding 500 megawatts of capacity from Small Modular Reactors.  

Microsoft is also considering reopening the Three Mile Island nuclear plant data center in Pennsylvania to power its AI projects, highlighting a larger trend in the tech industry, where major players seek reliable and sustainable energy solutions. 

Meta is making quite an advancement in its AI data center nuclear power plant. The commitment to nuclear power through its contribution to the technology industry’s ongoing effort of peaking carbon emissions and making its operations sustainable
