Bird Buddy’s AI tool to Connect and Protect Your Birds

Bird Buddy has added a new AI tool dubbed ‘Name That Bird’ enabling users to name and track individual birds who visit their feeders.

Bird Buddy is a startup based in Michigan that has innovative tools equipped with cameras for bird feeders. These feeders allow users to watch and identify birds in real-time.

The latest feature deploys AI to identify some unknown characteristics of each bird, making bird owners or even lovers more connected to birds. Even though the success and effectiveness of this feature are yet to be assessed, it is expected to enhance the bird-watching experience by enabling users to recognize and follow specific birds.

High-Resolution Sensors for Bird Identification

In a press release, the CEO of Bird Buddy, Franci Zidar, stated that, “The detail made available by the 5MP high-resolution Bird Buddy sensor present in all our feeders along with its close-up format is designed to bring out the full character of visiting birds,” adding that this would make the startup the unique ability to determine the necessary features for this function.

Protecting Animals from One Other

Name that Bird is part of a larger set of AI features provided by the company under a category called ‘Natural Intelligence’. According to Bird Buddy, this functionality is important since it can detect whether a bird is sick or injured, which helps prevent the spread of disease.

Additionally, Natural Intelligence is not only limited to birds. It can also send notifications about other types of animals, such as bees butterflies, lizards, raccoons, and even cats. Although it can’t identify each animal, it could still be helpful. For instance, if a cat got near to a bird feeder, the system notifies the owner promptly, so that the required actions are taken to protect the bird.

Final Thoughts

Bird Buddy’s latest features show that technology and more specifically AI can play a vital role in humans’ connection to nature, and in the protection of animals. Moreover, its ability to detect bird sickness does not only help in the treatment of such species, but also in preventing the spread of diseases that might put people’s lives at risk. The bird flu disease is a great example, as it affected birds and humans in direct contact with them, causing severe respiratory illness.
