Is AI Slowly Stealing Our Words?

As ChatGPT become more integral in our daily life, using natural language processing and LLMs are shaping the way we speak

As AI tools like ChatGPT become more integral in our daily life, using natural language processing and LLMs are shaping the way we speak, write and communicate.

From news articles to customer support conversations, we’re invested in machine-generated content, but what if LLM linguistics are controlling how we write and speak? Are we unknowingly creating a ‘robot language’ that eliminates human expression?

What some might perceive as the writing revolution is endorsed by natural language processing (NLP) and LLMs.

NLP allows computers to comprehend and create human language, and is applied in sentiment analysis, translation, and topic segmentation. LLMs like GPT, in contrast, generate human-like text by training on large datasets. These models, employing LLM writing style, generate coherent, contextually relevant language, but generally without actual understanding of language subtleness.

From Shakespeare to ChatGPTease

A study by senior researcher at Swinburne University of Technology, in Australia, Jeremy Nguyen, found that when subjects were shown a version of their writing generated by an LLM.

Their subsequent posts were longer and more formal, mimicking the tone of the AI, suggesting that writing styles can influence our writing, even subconsciously.

AI extends into creative fields like writing, it can write poetry, short stories, and other creative pieces using the best LLM for writing based on writing style software. However, while these tools are so effective at generating texts, they lack emotional resonance and originality of human expression.

For example, AI slang generators can mimic trending phrases but are unable to recreate the context of culture and therefore generate text that reads more like a machine.

Are we losing our unique voice in writing? As number of individuals using LLM writing style increasingly for work and everyday projects, English is possibly heading toward the trends in AI writing, further directing language and expression.

Natural language processing and LLMs are part of AI’s broader branch but function differently. NLP is all about understanding and processing human language with techniques like part-of-speech tagging and sentiment analysis.

Alternatively, LLMs are designed to generate language through training on vast databases, producing contextually relevant text on a broad spectrum of subjects without task-specific training. But they don’t have a deep understanding of language and often fail to capture subtle language features such as sarcasm.

Best LLM for Creative Writing

As natural language processing and LLMs evolve, they’re transforming how we speak, sometimes for the better, and sometimes in a way that might mix languages, and make us lose our sense of humanity.

Language evolution specialist Simon Kirby speculates that while AI may have its impact on communication styles, there also could be pushback when it comes to the creative writing skill.

“It’s pretty easy to imagine that English will become more standardized to whatever the standard of these language models is,” said Jill Walker Rettberg, a professor of digital culture at the University of Bergen’s Center for Digital Narrative, in Norway.

Individuals might start avoiding AI-generated language for more authentic, human-created creative writing, similar to the way individuals value handmade as opposed to mass-produced products.

LLM answering questions in different language formats began influencing and altering the communicative approaches. It would be wise to consider the impact of LLMs on the creativity of language diversity and individual expression.

AI’s integration into everyday language could homogenize communication and writing, but people should maintain the richness and nuances of human language and sense in a world driven by machines.
