Neuralink's Brain Chip Enables Paralyzed Patient to Play Games Using Thoughts

In an update to the recent first Neuralink chip implant, Musk’s company shared footage of the patient using their brain chip to control a computer mouse and play video games, just by the power of thought.

The 29-year-old patient, Noland Arbaugh, who has been paralyzed from below the shoulder for the past eight years due to a car accident, was seen in a video shared by Elon Musk on his X platform playing chess on a laptop and moving the mouse by only using the Neuralink device.

The accident occurred to Arbaugh back in 2016, while working at a children’s camp in Texas, which resulted in him losing all sensations below his shoulders, as reported by the Daily Mail

Actually, the successful use of this technology represents a remarkable development and strengthens experts’ beliefs that it could revolutionize care for the disabled.

Throughout the video, Arbaugh appeared happy as the mouse was moving across the online chessboard.

Back February 19, in a post on X, Musk expressed his satisfaction with the progress, noting that the patient has fully recovered without any known negative impacts. He also highlighted the remarkable ability to control a computer mouse solely through thoughts.

The Neuralink technology involves the implant of a brain-computer interface robotically, placed in a part of the brain that is responsible to control movement intention.

The system includes a computer chip connected to small, flexible threads sewn into the brain by a robot that is like a sewing machine.

For his part, the billionaire behind this technology stated that the installation procedure, which connects the electrode-like threads to specific brain regions, takes only 30 minutes and does not require any general anesthesia, adding that patients can return home on the same day.
