A new Huawei AI chip is ready for testing grounds, the next generation Ascend 910D chip, to rival Nvidia’s H1000 processor in the high-performance computing market, according to company sources and Wall Street Journal.
The Chinese manufacturer is trying to close the technology gap through its Huawei AI chip with US-based chipmakers, with a list of selected Chinese companies set to evaluate the 910D’s capabilities, to which Huawei believes will outperform Nvidia’s H1000.
Huawei AI Chip Strategy
The Ascend 910D chip will surpass Nvidia’s H100, one of the most powerful AI processors in the market now. Huawei’s Ascend processors, including previous models 910B and 910C, have been involved in the company’s AI pursuit.
Those concerned with the matter confirmed that the Huawei ascend 910 AI chip is in its preliminary development stage. The new chip will therefore carry out several tests to verify its performance before making it available in the market.
Huawei AI Chip Vs Nvidia
The US government has blocked China from accessing Nvidia’s most powerful chips, including the flagship H100, to limit China’s progress, especially in military use. Despite these obstacles, Huawei has continued to take steps in building powerful alternatives to Nvidia’s chips.
Despite the trade ban, the Chinese manufacturer advanced its Huawei AI chip development, shocking the US government last year by launching the Mate 60 smartphone with a domestically produced processor, demonstrating that the company can still innovate during challenges.
Based on recent reports, Huawei has also moved beyond simply designing single chips to developing more effective systems that fully utilize the Ascend 910D. In April, it unveiled the CloudMatrix 384, a system to connect as many as 384 Ascend 910C chips, enabling it to provide even more computing capability.
Experts in the field say that this will put Huawei ahead of Nvidia’s top products in some applications, although it will use more power. This is one of the moves Huawei is making to build a stronger AI ecosystem, possibly taking on Nvidia’s leadership in the market.
Both tech giants, Huawei and Nvidia are secret about their intentions moving forward, with Nvidia declining to comment and Huawei remaining silent. However, the Huawei new AI chip resilience and persistence to navigate the global complexities are still evident.
