OpenAI’s New Feature Customizing AI for Every Industry

OpenAI is rolling out a new feature that will allow companies to customize its most powerful chatbot, GPT-4o, using their own proprietary data.

This initiative will help businesses leverage AI tools by tailoring the chatbot’s functions to meet the specific industry needs.

GPT-4o Customized for Unique Needs

OpenAI’s new feature allows businesses fine-tune GPT-4o on proprietary information about their industry or tasks. What fine-tuning essentially means in this regard is the training of an AI model on more proprietary data to make it more proficient in the use cases to which it is applied.

A skateboard firm, for example, could fine-tune the model to create a customer service chatbot capable of answering detailed questions about skateboard components and maintenance.

Customizating GPT-4o is a relatively new capability, previously only available with smaller or less-advanced versions of OpenAI models. For instance, GPT-4o mini, a more affordable version, was designed to be more widely accessible.

Mighty Attempt to Bury Competitions

According to Oliver Godement, Head of Product for OpenAI’s API, customization is becoming an essential element for companies integrating AI into their systems.

AI companies are striving to differentiate themselves by developing features that appeal to various industries. With this new customization feature, OpenAI is positioning itself as a leader, making it easier for businesses to fine-tune their AI models based on specific needs, rather than relying on third-party services or less capable products.

“We’ve been extremely focused on lowering the bar, the friction, the amount of work it takes to get started,” Godement said. This reflects OpenAI’s commitment to making its AI tools accessible and user friendly.

To customize the chatbot based on their business needs, companies must upload their data on OpenAI’s servers.

According to John Allard, an engineer at OpenAI, the uploading process is quick, though currently, the customization supports text-based proprietary data and does not include images or any other content.

While OpenAI’s move to customize its chatbot is a significant one, it’s worth noting that some companies are opting to design AI chatbots tailored to their needs, rather than relying on popular models.

Some of these bots are chatbots specifically created to be as therapist to people, while they are trained on the required data.
