Romania’s Election Interfered by Russian Cyberattack Campaigns

Romania election authorities exposed a sponsored campaign involving TikTok influencers and cyber-attacks to sway presidential elections.

On Thursday, Romania election authorities exposed a state-sponsored campaign involving TikTok influencers and cyber-attacks to sway the country’s presidential elections, sparking fears over electoral integrity.

This revelation highlights a new level of sophistication in interference in social media manipulation and cyberwarfare in influencing the Romania elections 2024democratic processes, with TikTok participating in spreading coordinated messaging in political campaigns, particularly in countries with high levels of social media penetration.

The case highlights accountability issues in tech platforms in the 2024 Romanian Presidential election revealing the urgency for governments to prioritize robust cybersecurity frameworks and international cooperation to protect democratic institutions from rising cyberattacks.

TikTok Manipulation and Cyber-Attacks

Romania’s domestic intelligence service revealed that a “highly organized” campaign used TikTok influencers to promote Călin Georgescu is a Romanian far-right politician.

The campaign, originating from external locations to evade controls, shared identical messages across multiple accounts. One TikTok account alone reportedly spent $381,000 (€361,872) in a single month to promote content for Romanian elections favoring Georgescu, violating both TikTok’s rules and Romanian electoral laws.

At the same time, the content of the other candidates in reference to the Romanian presidential elections was subject to much stricter controls. Outgoing President Klaus Iohannis declassified documents detailing how paid content in support of Georgescu did not include a notice on election campaigning and gave an undue advantage to the far-right candidate.

Georgescu boasted of spending “zero” on the campaign, denying knowing anything about the influencers or financial backers involved.

Romanian intelligence reported 85,000 hacking attempts on election day, with stolen electoral data distributed on Russian cybercrime platforms. Attackers employed advanced methodologies to remain anonymous, suggesting state-sponsored activity, though Russia denied involvement in the Romanian presidential election’s results process.

Political Fallout and Future Implications

The revelations come only days before the runoff between Georgescu and reformist candidate Elena Lasconi for Romania presidential elections.

“Based on proof published today, competent State Authorities must intervene immediately with appropriate measures and determine its guilt,” said Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu-who has endorsed Lasconi-warned citizens of undermining Romania’s pro-European track.

Pro-EU protests erupted following revelations, with many Romanians demanding stronger guarantees of safeguards to democratic processes. Georgescu, however, warned against any potential unrest, appealing for citizens to “stay at home with your family” and ensure “social tranquility.”

The focus now shifts to how these digital platforms along and advanced cyber tactics breach the Romania election and its integrity. The ongoing investigations around the Romania election underlines the need for more sound cybersecurity measures across elections to make sure these processes are accompanied by increased control on social networking sites.
