Spotify Brings Comments to Its Podcasts

Starting this week, Spotify is introducing a new feature allowing users to comment on the platform’s podcast episodes.

Over the years, the streaming giant has expanded its interactive tools. It now includes polls, Q&As, and the ability to comment on podcasts, offering creators and listeners even more ways to connect.

Beyond the Likes

The platform’s new feature for podcasts provides real-time feedback and discussion, deepening the relationship between podcasters and their audiences. Ben Wilson, the creator of the “How to Take Over the World” podcast, explained how “comments on Spotify provide invaluable feedback.” In turn, it makes podcast creation more rewarding and fosters a stronger connection with listeners.

Through the platform’s new podcast feature, Spotify is a step closer to transforming itself from a mere music streaming service into a social network centered around audio content. YouTube but exclusively for music.

Through the updated Spotify for Podcasters mobile app, creators can now manage comments, track stats, and engage with fans anytime, anywhere. This development builds on Spotify’s previous enhancements, including the 2023 introduction of a TikTok-inspired discovery feed and features like artist profiles and Stories.

Spotify’s VP of Podcast Product, Maya Prohovnik, explained the strategic importance of this new feature. “Comments have been a long-requested addition from both podcasters and listeners. This two-way conversation can form real communities around shows,” she noted. The addition of comments to the platform’s podcasts not only enriches the listening experience but also provides creators with immediate feedback, fostering a more interactive and engaging environment.

Not Everyone Is Made for Glory

Many companies have previously tried to integrate some social networking aspects into their platforms. Apple, for instance, introduced and then discontinued its Ping and Connect features after it failed to gain traction. In contrast, Spotify has steadily introduced social elements without making grand declarations, quietly evolving its app to enhance user engagement and interaction.

Prohovnik hinted that the new comments on the platform’s podcasts might eventually extend to other content formats on Spotify. This goes to show the company’s commitment to adapt and innovate based on user needs and market trends.

This phased rollout of comments for podcast listeners is set to begin this week in most Spotify markets, allowing fans to engage more deeply with their favorite shows.
