Spotify is rolling out a new direct messaging (DM) feature called Spotify Messages, allowing users to share music, podcasts, and audiobooks without leaving the app which previously, listeners could only send recommendations via third-party platforms like WhatsApp, Instagram, or Snapchat.
The Spotify in-app messages benefits, available this week to users aged 16 and older in select markets, aims to make sharing content more seamless.
“Users have told us that they want a dedicated space within the app to share their next favorite song, podcast or audiobook with friends and family, and an easy way to keep track of recommendations,” the company said in a statement.
Spotify guided social music discovery added that the feature is meant to complement, not replace, its integrations with social media apps, “Messages on Spotify is designed to complement these integrations, not replace them. We’re excited to continue offering more ways to drive hype for the Spotify content you love.”
Can You Message Someone on Spotify?
With the new Spotify Messages feature, the streaming giant’s users can start in-app one-to-one conversations. Suggested contacts will include people they have collaborated with on playlists, joined in ‘Jams’ or ‘Blends,’ or share ‘Family’ or ‘Duo’ plans with.
To share music on Spotify feature, listeners can tap the share icon from the “Now Playing” screen, choose a friend, and hit “send.”
Once a recipient accepts a Spotify Messages request, they can reply with text or emojis. The Spotify new features can be accessed from the user’s profile photo in the top left corner of the app.
Like other social platforms, Spotify connect is adding safety tools.
Users can block accounts, reject messaging on Spotify requests, and report suspicious activity. The company emphasized that “Spotify’s Terms of Use and Platform Rules against illegal and harmful content still apply to Messages,” noting it uses proactive detection technology to flag unlawful content.
Spotify’s in-app message braze also takes data security into consideration with “industry-standard encryption” for messages in transit and at rest.
The Spotify Connect feature will deepen user engagement and create social experiences beyond listening. While it remains to be seen how widely the feature will be adopted, Spotify 2025 features are betting that the ability to text friends directly will keep people on the app longer.
