The Weeknd Delivers 4 Million Meals to Gaza
With seven No.1 songs on the charts, The Weeknd has just scored another hit . He has donated $2.5 million to the United Nation’s World Food Programme, more commonly known as WFP. This was done through his XO Humanitarian Fund. This amount will ensure that 173,000 Palestinians have meals for two weeks.
Abel Tesfaye (his birth name) launched the XO Humanitarian Fund to help feed people on the brink of starvation. It has received significant public support, thanks largely to his plea to ‘help send lifesaving food to the world’s hungriest people”. The fund was launched in March 2022. It was largely inspired by the simultaneous effects of violent conflict and unrelenting drought in Ethiopia, his parents’ birthplace.
The conflict has lasted almost two months
The events in Gaza since the conflict started on October 7th have wrought terrible devastation to the civilian population. Death, hunger, and illness have stalked like predators through the strip and communication with the outside world has been sporadic, to the say the least.
The XO Humanitarian Fund, started six months after Abel Tesfaye’s initiation as Goodwill Ambassador for the WFP, channels all funds through the United Nations program.
Corrinne Fleischer, WFP Director for the MENA and Eastern Europe Regions, commented. “This conflict has unleashed a humanitarian catastrophe beyond reckoning. And WFP is working round the clock to provide aid in Gaza. But we need a major scale up to address the desperate level of hunger we are seeing.” This is according to a quote in Billboard magazine.
There had been a much-needed ceasefire in the last week to facilitate the mutual release of prisoners. But hostilities have again resumed. And the need for more humanitarian aid will become a reality sooner rather than later.
Hunger is a blight on the world’s consciousness. We should all be thankful that The Weeknd’s initiative will bring meals and relief to the innocent victims of this conflict.
