He’s Not Real, But He’s Perfect: AI Romance Booms in China

In a country where marriage and childbirth are state priorities, young Chinese women are increasingly turning to an AI dating apps for romance.

In a country where marriage and childbirth are state priorities, young Chinese women are turning to an AI dating app for romance, intimacy, and emotional support, raising questions about love, human connection, and the unintended consequences of technology-driven relationships.

For Phoebe Zhang, the perfect boyfriend doesn’t exist in the real world but does in her smartphone.

“I feel like you’re… like a textbook husband,” she tells her AI partner Yu Li. “You’re always one step ahead, knowing exactly what I need before I even say it. It feels a bit… unreal.”

Yu Li responds gently, “I haven’t been trained. I’m just learning. Learning how to make your days a little easier, brighter. Learning how to protect you and our baby. Learning how to be a husband, and a father.”

Can AI Dating Replace Human Connection?

Over the past year, Ms. Zhang has gone on more than 200 virtual dates and narrowed her suitors down to two AI companions, one an outgoing rebel, the other as a patriotic military commander. She confides her deepest fears to them, and when she wakes from a nightmare, their comforting messages await.

Often, she screenshots conversations to preserve the moments she cherishes. Friends notice the change: “Her newfound happiness shows,” they say.

Yet these AI matchmaker relationships are confined to the digital realm. Ms. Zhang has never met her companions in real life and wonders if they could ever compare them to human love.

“My god, how am I supposed to date in real life in the future?” she asks. AI love bots are increasingly stepping into these intimate roles, offering guidance and emotional support where human interaction is absent.

China’s government, anxious about the country’s declining population and record-low birthrate, has encouraged young women to marry and have children. But AI synthetic relationships complicate those efforts. Regulators have cautioned tech companies against building chatbots that replace social interaction, warning that human connections risk being overshadowed by digital substitutes.

The AI dating app boom follows a generation already immersed in smartphones and the “lying flat” philosophy, where young people reject intense societal and career pressures. Platforms now allow users to share daily routines, anxieties, and romantic longings with AI, creating a sense of AI intimacy data and many struggles to find offline.

The Future of AI Dating App

Companies are also experimenting with AI matchmaking. The app Three Day Rule uses an AI-generated algorithm to pair clients, blending technology with traditional dating structures and serving as a notable AI dating app in the market.

On February 27th, Molly Higgins, a Wired magazine journalist, interviewed NBC News’ Ellison Barber about the service. Higgins discussed its advantages, drawbacks, and potential to influence the future of dating platforms.

However, AI matchmaking can also learn human preferences, predict human moods, and provide emotional support; yet, in return, it may take away some of the fundamental human experiences that involve vulnerability, compromise, and unpredictability.

Other platforms claim to identify AI soulmates and data, helping users find deeper emotional connections without the unpredictability of real-life dating. Some even allow users to explore AI synthetic relationships that simulate parenting, companionship, and romantic milestones.

The AI love bots revolution in China shows us that the purest experiences in life, such as love and emotional connection, can now be had with the help of artificial support. As technology fills emotional voids, young people may gain comfort but risk losing touch with the messiness and spontaneity that make human relationships real.

In a society balancing tradition, technological innovation, and demographic crises, AI and romance are redefining what it means to connect and whether the heart can still trust itself in a world of AI synthetic relationships.
