Apple bought Darwin AI, a Canadian company, earlier this year to strengthen its AI division, according to Bloomberg

The Canadian company was renowned for its development of AI technologies tailored for inspecting components in manufacturing processes, as well as for creating efficient, compact AI systems.

After being acquired by Apple, Darwin AI shut down its website and all social media accounts. Several employees from the Canadian startup, including co-founder Alexander Wong, joined Apple’s AI department, with Wong becoming a manager of one of Apple’s AI teams.

In parallel, the U.S. tech giant, confirmed in a statement aiming to answer to the inquiries regarding its acquisition activities stating that from time to time, Apple, does buy smaller companies without the need to disclose the reasons or the plans behind it.

Apple is presently focusing on developing and integrating advanced AI features into its upcoming operating systems, including iOS 18 and macOS 15, to enhance its competitiveness against rivals such as Google and Microsoft.  It is also looking forward to adding AI capabilities in various applications and services, such as customer service.

In this regard, and for reasons related to privacy, data user protection, and cost reduction, the iPhone maker seeks to run AI features on the devices themselves without the need for a connection to servers. Hence, the Canadian startup can assist in achieving this goal by creating small AI systems that are similar to Google’s Gemini Nano model.
