Samsung to Launch AI-Enhanced Bixby

Get ready for Samsung's upgraded voice assistant, Bixby AI. With advanced Gen AI technology, it brings a range of new features.

Samsung is set to release an enhanced version of its voice assistant, Bixby AI, this year.

TM Roh, the head of Samsung’s mobile division, confirmed the upgrade to CNBC, revealing that it will be based on Samsung’s proprietary artificial intelligence models.

The resurgence of interest in digital assistants can be credited to the success of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, pushing Samsung to advance Bixby using its own large language model (LLM).

“We’re going to advance Bixby with the application of Gen AI technology,” Roh said in Korean via a translator.

Bixby’s Journey Since 2017

Bixby first appeared in 2017, alongside Samsung’s Galaxy S8 smartphone, and will offer various functions, such as live translations and restaurant recommendations. One of its notable features, Bixby Vision, allows users to scan objects with their phone camera and receive detailed information about them.

While there were earlier reports about an upgraded Bixby AI, this is the first official confirmation of its launch timeline. Generative AI (Gen AI) refers to technology that can create content like answers to questions or images. The LLM, a model trained on vast amounts of data, supports this AI.

Despite the Bixby upgrade, Samsung will continue to support multiple voice assistants on its devices.

“We are reinforcing and bringing more AI capabilities to our products,” Roh stated, emphasizing the coexistence of Google’s AI assistant on Samsung’s latest devices.

AI Advancements in Mobile Technology

On Wednesday, Samsung launched two new foldable smartphones, the Galaxy Z Fold6 and Z Flip6, showcasing new AI tools designed to encourage users to switch to premium devices.

This announcement comes shortly after Apple disclosed that its assistant, Siri, will also receive an AI upgrade, enabling it to utilize OpenAI’s ChatGPT for more complex queries. Samsung’s Bixby upgrade is part of a broader strategy to enhance AI features across its product line.

“As consumers use more AI capabilities, they can actually feel the convenience and benefits they bring,” Roh said, expressing confidence in AI’s role as a driving force behind new product purchases.

Final Thoughts

Samsung’s upcoming Bixby AI upgrade reflects the company’s dedication to advancing AI technology. By integrating more AI features into their devices, Samsung aims to provide users with enhanced functionality and convenience. This strategic move not only keeps Samsung competitive with other tech giants like Apple but also positions it at the forefront of AI innovation in the mobile industry. The continued development of Bixby and other AI tools underscores the growing importance of artificial intelligence in shaping the future of mobile technology.
