Ahead of this year’s Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, Chinese firm, Honor, has officially unveiled its latest smartphone, the Magic 6 Pro, to the global market.

The unveiling event, held on Sunday, was a showcase of the Magic 6 Pro’s new eye-tracking AI feature, which will enable users to unlock and even control their cars remotely by gazing at their smartphone screens, a functionality already operational in China and set for international commercial rollout.

Originating from Huawei Technologies’ divestiture to Shenzhen Zhixin New Information Technology Co., Ltd., a corporation under state ownership, in November 2020, Honor has since been mounting the ranks in the tech world, particularly within China.

Within its field, Honor closely contests with industry giants such as Apple and Oppo, with Apple securing a 17.3% market slice in China and Honor trailing slightly at 17.1%, as per data from the International Data Corporation, the introduction of the Magic 6 Pro represents a new tactical effort to expand its market presence.

Honor’s Magicbook Pro 16 Laptop

This laptop is distinguished by an AI capability that enables direct synchronization of applications across devices, exemplified by the simple drag of messaging apps from an Android phone to a Windows PC.

George Zhao, Honor’s CEO, articulated the company’s ambition, emphasizing the role of collaborative innovation in the AI era – an area further manifested through Honor’s initiative to incorporate the LlaMA 2 large language model (LLM), similar to ChatGPT, into its smartphones worldwide.

The timing of these announcements, strategically placed just before the MWC, highlights Honor’s intent to capitalize on the current generative AI enthusiasm to fortify its market stance amidst a period of stagnating growth in the smartphone sector.

While the fusion of AI with smartphones and similar devices opens up new frontiers of possibilities, it concurrently prompts discussions on the legal and ethical dimensions of such advancements.
