For the first time, all smartphones in the Top 10 list were 5G capable, highlighting the rapid adoption of this technology across premium devices. Apple’s latest models, the iPhone 15 series, notably secured three of the top three positions. The iPhone 15 Pro Max led the pack, followed by the iPhone 15 and the iPhone 15 Pro, while the iPhone 15 Plus landed in the eighth position. The iPhone 14 also performed strongly, securing the fourth spot.

Samsung’s highest-ranking model, the Galaxy S24 Ultra, took fifth place. The base model Galaxy S24 and other variants like the Galaxy A15 5G, Galaxy A54, and Galaxy A34 also made the list, showcasing a broad consumer preference for Samsung’s offerings.

Counterpoint Research noted a trend where consumers are increasingly retaining their smartphones for extended periods, largely due to minimal advancements in new models. This behavior is steering customers towards high-end smartphones to maintain technological relevance over time.

The global smartphone industry reached new revenue heights in the first quarter of 2024, driven by strong sales from Apple and growing markets around the world. Apple alone accounted for 41% of the quarter’s revenue, achieving its highest ever first-quarter average selling price of $900. In contrast, Samsung held an 18% revenue share, followed by China’s Xiaomi and Oppo with 6% each, and Vivo with 4%.

The industry trend is shifting towards premium devices, with seven out of the top ten smartphones being classified in this category, each with a wholesale price of $600 or above. Counterpoint anticipates that these best-sellers will continue to dominate the market as manufacturers focus on equipping their portfolios with premium features, including generative AI, which is becoming a significant selling point.

The iPhone 15 Pro Max’s success marks its first top spot in a non-seasonal quarter for Apple, reflecting a growing consumer preference for high-end models. The Apple Pro lineup, in particular, has seen a surge in popularity, making up half of Apple’s total sales in the first quarter of 2024 – a significant jump from 24% in the same period in 2020.

Samsung’s S24 series benefited from an early update and the integration of generative AI technology, which has resonated well with users eager to explore new content creation tools and enhanced interaction capabilities.

As the smartphone market continues to evolve, premium features and advanced technology like AI are increasingly determining the choices of consumers looking to invest in new devices.
