Meta Launches New AI Labeling Options Set for 2025
As we set foot in 2025, on January 1 Meta announced an AI-powered profiles for Facebook and Instagram to reimagine social media by integrating and labeling AI generated content.
Meta is leveraging AI content creation for social media to transform users’ engagement on its platforms, reaffirming its commitment to stay on the very edge of technological developments, while at the same time Meta to start labeling AI-generated content is a challenge and an opportunity in order to reshape the social media landscape.
AI, Center of Attention
Over the past year, Meta launched a set of AI features like AI chatbots on Messenger and character design tools, for users to create “hundreds of thousands of characters.”
Connor Hayes, Meta’s vice president of product for generative AI said that the AI generated profiles will act more and more like regular accounts with bios, profile pictures, and posting capabilities in the near future.
“We expect these AIs to actually, over time, exist on our platforms, kind of in the same way that accounts do,” Hayes said in an interview with the Financial Times.
Hayes also highlighted how Meta generative AI tools enable editing photos and create AI assistants. And more is still to come. The Meta generative AI tools are not yet released such as the text to video option which allows users to insert themselves into AI generated videos. Meta previews generative AI tools planned for its platformsto creators, such a tool could offer news ways to connect with audiences or do personalized content.
AI Concerns for 2025
Labeling AI generated content could spark criticism over Meta’s AI ambitions, creating the possibility of political manipulation, low quality content, and many more disastrous issues.
Becky Owen, the former head of creator innovations at Meta, questioned the impact of AI driven accounts without human relatability or emotion. “Without robust safeguards, the platforms risk amplifying false narratives through these AI-driven accounts,” warned Owen.
Meta is yet ready to introduce Meta generative AI tools that are in the center of AI, but these advancements on the platform need to be properly aligned with social values. With the developed capabilities of AI, which now plays a more fundamental role in structuring cyberspace, the questions related to users, quality content, and social relations are no longer disregarded but rather spotlighted. Labeling AI generated content could be a great starting point for the year or not.
