MAI-1 Competes with Microsoft-Backed ChatGPT

Microsoft is developing its own AI language model, MAI-1, which is aiming at competing with those of Google and OpenAI, according to The Information.

This new language model will be led by Mustafa Suleyman, the co-founder of Google DeepMind and former CEO of Inflection. Meanwhile, the purpose behind the MAI-1 has not yet been defined and its success will be determined based on its performance.

MAI-1 is expected to outperform the company’s previous smaller AI models in size, which are open-source ones. Thus, this AI language model will be more expensive when it comes to having access to it.

On the other hand, Microsoft has recently introduced the Phi-3-mini, a smaller AI model that mainly aims to attract a larger audience with more budget friendly choices.

Looking forward to enhancing the new MAI-1 model, the tech giant has dedicated many resources, including the deployment of clusters of servers that are equipped with the graphic processing units of Nvidia, as well as a significant number of datasets.

The upcoming model is expected to have around 500 billion parameters compared to OpenAI’s GPT-4 which has one trillion parameters and Phi-3-mini with 3.8 billion parameters. It is worth noting that MAI-1 may be unveiled by the company during its Build developer conference, which will be held on May 21st.

Mustafa Suleyman took over the position of Microsoft’s consumer AI unit in March 2024, and several inflection employees have also joined the company.  While MAI-1 is not considered as a direct continuation of Inflection’s work, it might leverage from the startup for training data purposes.

The competition between tech giants has always been the norm, with each company working hard to outdo itself and take the lead in this rapidly growing sector.

The main question now is why has Microsoft decided to rival OpenAI, a company that it has backed from the beginning and heavily invested in?
