Make Up Artist Lost Her Job to AI Tool

Due to Artificial Intelligence recruitment tools that implement facial recognition technology, a make-up artist lost her job.

As of this week it appears that AI has an issue with the beauty sector that has been on the rise for some time now. It all began when a robot replaced a technician last week in a beauty salon. The question is who would trust the bot with their eyes? The issue doesn’t lie here, however. The issue is with how high the UK ranks amongst several other countries that use Artificial Intelligence (AI) to assist human resources in the process of recruiting.

The Story

Back in 2020 Anthea Mairoudhiou, former make-up artist at Mac, was laid off due to her facial expressions that were recorded on video when an interview was conducted with her. The interview was recorded using HireVue camera which is a US based company using AI facial recognition technology to observe candidates and mark whether they can pass the interview or not.

Regardless of the extravagant comments that Anthea received on her make up, she unfortunately was fired from HireVue due to unfavorable body language assessments. Later on, in the early days of 2020, HireVue disabled the facial analysis feature from all new assessments in response to concerns expressed by a number of employees. After filing a lawsuit against MAC Cosmetics’ parent company, Estee Lauder, Ms. Mairoudhiou reached an out-of-court settlement.

Reliance On AI At Wrong Times

The UK, UAE, USA, and India are using such tools in order to hire people. The AI tools range from assisting HR in hiring people to firing, and also training newcomers. The idea behind it is great but the application isn’t. This is due to the fact that although it is called Artificial Intelligence, it doesn’t have the capabilities to have full emotional intelligence. With their emotional intelligence humans are able to know which employee is worth keeping, what task to give them, and which employee doesn’t fit in with the company.
