A coalition of tech leaders and scholars issued a warning to regulators against imposing a moratorium, or preemptive ban, on the development of superintelligent AI (ASI), as it would constitute a “historic mistake,” according to Data Innovation Institute.
Proponents contend that while governance frameworks for AI safety as needed, a pure blanket prohibition is not only unenforceable and counterproductive but would drive research underground – or into the hands of less trustworthy state actors.
Debates splinter along ideological lines on whether to stop ASI’s progress, as pushed by tech and policymakers who say superintelligent machines pose existential risks.
Yet, evidence suggests otherwise. Today’s systems are AI superintelligence superpower lies in being powerful tools, not autonomous entities plotting beyond human control.
Fear Rooted in Speculation
Calls to outlaw superintelligence assume the imminent arrival of an AI capable of independent reasoning, planning, and sentience to intelligize AI. But, according to the new analysis, such systems do not exist and may never resemble the sci-fi visions that fuel public anxiety.
Current AI excels at tightly defined tasks: analyzing medical scans, generating code, or optimizing supply chains. It does not “think,” choose, or act independently accordingly to hyperintelligent AI.
