Carrara, Italy, famous for its Michelangelo’s marble masterpieces, is now leading in robotic sculpture, with startups like Robotor and Monumental Labs taking merging Renaissance artistry with advanced robotics to reconstruct creative traditions.
The companies deploy AI-guided arms to carve marble with micron precision through an articulate blend of algorithmic design with human artistry. The video pushed purists to debate the soul of machine-made art, all while the machines are slashing production time by 70%.

The Italian city, is known for its marble masterpieces created by Renaissance artists like Michelangelo, making it the point of sealing of this significant, artistic technology. The world has seen technology taking over several sectors from healthcare to finance, but the most special one was art.
Robot Sculpturing Modernizing Ancient Art
Filippo Tincolini and Giacomo Massari, founder of Robotor, has developed a sculpting robot powered by AI and advanced software to power the process of marble sculpting. sculptures carved by robots are very precise and fast, that overcomes the speed of human sculptors that takes weeks and months of crafting.
The robot marble sculpture system uses diamond-tipped mechanical arms to carve, polish, and clean marble autonomously, speeding production while reducing waste for sustainable art.

Despite the technology’s capabilities, Massari emphasizes that robot sculpture art does not replace the artist, “it is not a creative, but a mere executor,” he explains.
Artists provide the vision’s design and sketches, and the robot simply brings that vision to life by executing the carving, freeing creators to focus purely on artistry.
“Artists have always relied on technological knowledge and ingenuity to find the materials and tools they need to express their dreams, thoughts, visions, or beliefs. And innovation has always had an impact on the way art is made,” says Massari.
Artisans Rising Against Machines
AI-robots are going viral across many companies. Robotor is gaining traction, but also other companies like Monumental Labs are also using AI-powered robots to create sculptures carved by robots. A viral video by Monumental Labs showed a robot carving out a Renaissance-inspired statue and sparked a huge online controversy.
The critics argued that AI robots, by automating the sculpting process, take away the soul and meaning from art. They questioned whether a machine could ever create the depth and imagination of master artists like Michelangelo.
In response, Monumental Labs clarified on their Instagram page that robots only rough out the basic shape, with human sculptors finishing the details using traditional tools. Still, many were skeptical, asserting that even if made by robot art sculpture is completed by human hands in the final stages, the use of robots cheapens the artistic process.
Future of Robotic Sculpture
Both Monumental Labs and Robotor want to expand artists’ capabilities, not replace them. Considering their robotic sculpture machines are intended to accelerate creation for artists to realize previously impossible design, even with unconventional materials.

There is still a controversial debate around robots, but there’s no denying that robots are undoubtedly transforming art. Advanced machines let artists create with never-seen-before convenience and precision.
Eventually, robot sculpting is not about replacing human creativity but empowering artists to explore new horizons. The question remains: can robots ever truly capture the soul of art, or will the human touch always be essential?
