AI Regulation Under Trump's Term Alarms Big Tech
President-Elect Donald Trump has pledged to repeal President Biden’s AI safety executive order upon taking office in January 2025 in a push for open-source AI development, with experts cautioning reducing regulatory oversight to heighten safety within the AI industry, according to R Street Institute.
According to Trump’s team, “We will repeal Joe Biden’s dangerous Executive Order that hinders AI Innovation and imposes Radical Leftwing ideas on the development of this technology.”
President-Elect Donald Trump’s proposed deregulation aligns with his administration’s focus on fostering tech startups with supporters believing this approach could accelerate digital growth, for smaller companies to experiment and compete, and perhaps challenge the dominance of giants in AI development.
Open-Source AI and its Revolution
The open-source AI model, which gives free access to modify the tool and model of AI could flourish under Trump’s regulatory approach. In this model, open access allows smaller developers into innovation without restrictions from normal systems led by big tech companies.
Vice President-Elect J.D. Vance criticized the domination of major tech companies in AI, arguing that existing regulations often reinforce their positions while restricting new entrants.
In a Senate hearing earlier this year, Vance said, “If we overregulate AI under pressure from incumbents, it will advantage them at the expense of the American consumer.”
Supporters argue that open-source AI will boost job creation and economic activity for smaller tech firms to compete globally. Critics, however, warn that without regulation, AI’s misuse could escalate ethical and security risks, endangering users.
On the other hand, Elon Musk has been very vocal about the need for open-source AI, even founding OpenAI himself. In many ways, that gives him a degree of influence in helping to shape Trump’s policies.
Amanda Brock, CEO at OpenUK, referenced Musk’s influence by stating that, “Elon Musk has at least paid lip service to open sourcing technology, and his proximity to Trump might amplify this vision.”
AI Experts on Safety and Big Tech Companies
The success of open-source AI threatens to challenge the dominance of currently leading AI industry players like Google, Microsoft, and Amazon. If powerful AI models become democratized, smaller companies can decrease their dependence on these giants and shake up their business models.
But here is a flip side, Open access might give way to unregulated development and make people wonder whether AI is going to improve in a safe and responsible way.
Peter Wood, chief technical officer at Spectrum Search, said that “Smaller players, though, might struggle to compete, potentially stifling creativity and leaving us with a more monopolized AI industry.”
AI experts say the move to open-source AI is at a tipping point in tech development but also one that must be balanced by measures to block abusive use.
Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta and an advocate for open source, has said that “It’s important large companies, including my own, don’t control this technology.”
A Bump in the Road of AI Development
Donald Trump’s AI regulation strategy will be monumental for the tech industry given it will give more power to smaller to medium companies (SME) and democratize technology access. However, critics warn it could create a chaotic landscape, prioritizing innovation over critical safety measures.
The fight over open-source AI highlights a greater tension between innovation and regulation. If the policies of Trump speed along a more competitive and inclusive technological landscape for AI experts, the negative impact will shape the future of AI development, and it will shape the tech society for the next four years.
