AI Regulation Under Trump's Term Alarms Big Tech

Trump to cancel Biden’s AI safety which could spark a flow in Open-Source AI, increasing innovation, safety concerns, according to AI expert.

As 2025 is approaches, Donald Trump promises to cancel Biden’s AI safety order which could spark a flow in Open-Source AI, increasing innovation but raising safety concerns, according to AI experts.

According to Trump’s team that stated that, “We will repeal Joe Biden’s dangerous Executive Order that hinders AI Innovation and imposes Radical Leftwing ideas on the development of this technology.”

Trump’s proposed a set of regulations that are in line with Trump’s administration focus on not getting in the way of potential tech start-ups.

Supporters say that could take the pace of innovation to a new level, allowing smaller companies to experiment and compete in ways that might challenge the dominance of big technology firms in the development of AI.

Open-Source AI and its Revolution

The open-source AI model, which gives free access to modify the tool and model of AI could flourish under Trump’s regulatory approach. In this model, open access allows smaller developers into innovation without restrictions from normal systems led by big tech companies.

Newly appointed Vice President JD Vance has come out against the current big tech monopoly on AI innovation, saying regulations often serve to strengthen the dominant players while holding new ones. “If we overregulate AI under pressure from incumbents, it will advantage them at the expense of the American consumer,” Vance said in a Senate hearing earlier this year.

Supporters say open-source AI could lead to the creation of more jobs and heighten economic activity, allowing smaller tech firms to enter and compete in the global marketplace. Critics say that that if left unregulated, the doors will be wide open for unsafe uses of AI, putting users at risk and increasing ethical and security concerns.

On the other hand, Elon Musk has been very vocal about the need for open-source AI, even founding OpenAI himself. In many ways, that gives him a degree of influence in helping to shape Trump’s policies.

Amanda Brock, CEO at OpenUK, referenced Musk’s influence by stating that, “Elon Musk has at least paid lip service to open sourcing technology, and his proximity to Trump might amplify this vision.”

AI Experts on Safety and Big Tech Companies

The success of open-source AI threatens to challenge the dominance of currently leading AI industry players like Google, Microsoft, and Amazon. If powerful AI models become democratized, smaller companies can decrease their dependence on these giants and shake up their business models.

On the other hand, there is a flip side, Open access might give way to unregulated development and make people wonder whether AI is going to improve in a safe and responsible way.

Peter Wood, chief technical officer at Spectrum Search, said that “Smaller players, though, might struggle to compete, potentially stifling creativity and leaving us with a more monopolized AI industry.”

AI experts say the move to open-source AI is at a tipping point in tech development but also one that must be balanced by measures to block abusive use.

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta and an advocate for open source, has said that “It’s important large companies, including my own, don’t control this technology.”

A Bump in the Road of AI Development

Trump’s presidency approach to AI regulation presents a critical turning point for the tech industry. On the one hand, it could empower smaller companies and democratize access to new technology. On the other, it risks the encouragement of a chaotic environment where AI innovation leaves behind the mechanisms to ensure its safety.

The fight over open-source AI highlights a greater tension between innovation and regulation. If the policies of Trump speed along a more competitive and inclusive technological landscape for AI experts, the negative impact will shape the future of AI development, and it will shape the tech society for the next four years.
